Should I buy it?
Discussion
Been offered an FN2 Civic Type-R GT for £5.5k (this is the price the owner got from webuyanycar).
0 previous owners
48k miles
57 plate
Full Honda/specialist service history
Immaculate condition (have seen but not driven)
There's another FN2 on AutoTrader with part service history, 46k miles, 2 previous owners, quite a few scuffs on paint/alloys and they're asking £6,850!! https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...
Only thing is I prefer the EP3 shape!
I currently have an old Fiesta as a run around and haven't had VTEC before...
Would I be silly not to?

I used to have a FN2, and was very fond of it, but I'd recommend a test drive first. The ride is extremely firm and not to everybody's taste.
Yes, my old man has driven it and said exactly the same. I'm mid-20s though so I'm not too bothered, but the roads around me are terrible! Going to test drive it tomorrow night.RSTurboPaul said:
Are you going to do the usual HPI checks and/or get it inspected, just to make sure it's not 'too good to be true'?
My dad MOTs the car for the owner, says it's absolutely mint. Have done a HPI/vehiclecheck.co.uk check too and it came back all clear.Like I say I'd prefer an EP3 or something RWD, but I'm thinking I could run this car for a year and get my money back at least.

It's got low miles but there are plenty of FN2s around at that price. Surprised WBAC offered so much.
Yeah I saw that. The GTs seem to fetch for *slightly* a bit more though. And apparently this one will be hard to beat condition wise.Does anyone know what they're like for handling? I heard the EP3s aren't a great steer, but can be improved with some mods. Are these similar?

Not correct, that car is a bargain at that price.https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2...

That price seems roughly right for the private market - seems a strong price for WBAC - though if it is genuinely mint condition I'd pounce, as a lot of these are not. I just bought one for 6k, 2009, FSH (apparently...), 56k miles, two previous owners, though it needs new tyres and the alloys refurbished, and has a number of other niggles that need resolved, and the paint work is swirled to bits.
Few things to check for: if it is on 19" Rage alloys, check for any laquer damage, as they are expensive to refurbish; check for squeaks and rattles in the dashboard and make sure you can live with it; check for rust under the rubber seal along the top of the window; make sure it has the front grille badge (sixty quid to replace!); check the oil is to the top and ask when it is changed and if it burns oil.

First one 09/70k/GP kit for £5,900, seems okay price wise, don’t know until you’ve done a HPI check though.
Black one looks good but higher miles on 74k.

Yes, does seem slightly strong from webuyanycar. My dad does say it's mint, he MOT'd it yesterday and has done for a long time, it only needs some new front pads. Don't think it has the 19" alloys. Thanks for the tips! I've read about checking along the windows for rust... I'm assuming that's on the inside? Can't quite imagine how to do it? Haha. Apparently the owner has always kept it garaged though, so it shouldn't be a problem, but still worth a look. Unfortunately I'm going to have to keep it outside in the weather this winter if I do buy it! How are you finding yours?!

Simply peel the rubber back on the outside - it will look like brown staining.

I'm really enjoying it, though it is a big step up from my last car so I don't have a hot hatch to compare it too. It is bugging me a little at the moment, as it has numerous issues that I am slowly resolving - needs new tyres, alloys have surface corrosion, smells of dog (spent the weekend dismantling and powerwashing the boot trim ...), a couple of internal rattles (glovebox door and speedometer perspex), a rattly exhaust, a broken passenger side electric window, a slightly scary level of oil consumption ...
It's a great car to drive quickly in the twisties, though it is almost too stiff - it bounces about rough B-roads and you never quite feel totally in control. It cruises fine on the motorway, though is quite rough when the surface isn't butter smooth. It is great at the high RPMs, the only problem being if you drive about in second and third to enjoy it, you will drink fuel at an alarming rate!

Do you mean the "Type R" badge? That was an optional extra.Edited by Gareth1974 on Thursday 12th October 09:43
Ordered a fake for just now for £7 from eBay ... perhaps one day I can justify sixty quid for a small bit of chrome!

Same here, it'll be a big step up from my run around. Those issues are annoying, but at least they aren't *too* costly to fix! I have heard they do use a lot of oil when you're in VTEC a lot. Also read some Eibach springs help it absorb the bumps better, so maybe look into replacing them.
oil consumption on type R hondas varies quite a bit depending on how they've been used and how they were run in.
My Dc5 integra uses about half a litre of oil per 1000 miles. Anything up to 1l of oil per 1000 miles is considered pretty normal.
Just keep a top up bottle on hand and check the level every few weeks, it doesn't really add much of an expense, and if anything makes you more dilligent about keeping an eye on the underbonnet stuff.
Fuel consumption is fine really, I boot around in vtec quite a lot (because life is short), and get probably 25-27mpg. I don't know what UKDM civic type Rs are mapped to, but i run my DC5 on V-power, don't really look at the pump prices anymore, just accept that it's part of owning a performance oriented car.
Depending on mileage it may be due a major service, this will be in the region of £500-600 or so.

Sound good. Don't think I've ever had a car that doesn't use oil tbh.My Dc5 integra uses about half a litre of oil per 1000 miles. Anything up to 1l of oil per 1000 miles is considered pretty normal.

That's a thought, will ask him when the major service is due. Seems quite pricey!
The thing is I can't really haggle on the £5.5k, as he can just take it down to WBAC in Cheetham Hill on Friday haha.

I have averaged around 29mpg in my first 600 miles. 22-25mpg hooning it home, but 30-35mpg on motorway runs (seen as high as 39-42). It appears to have used around 750ml of oil in 600 miles, though I am not convinced I read it right first time round - I have topped up and will keep a watchful eye. The UKDM Type R's are mapped to 95RON, so it probably is unnecessary to use anything more.
The major service is 75k miles / 6 years I understand. Mine has FSH, but I am not convinced all the services have been carried out properly - for example, valve clearances are meant to be done every 25k miles, and mine haven't been checked in the last three services, despite having done 40k miles in that time. I will probably ask for a thorough job to be done at the next service in May.
