When I first saw the Citroen C6 at its launch I told myself I’d have one. I’m now in a position to have one, and there’s a one owner example for sale locally to me.

I’m now just having those jitters regarding all the horror stories you hear around parts costs etc... I do have a few questions bearing in mind that this car will not do a lot of mileage.

The 2.7 V6 Diesel: Looks like I’ll have no option but to go for this engine. They seem to have reliability issues in JLR products - is it the same in the C6?

Parts costs - Really horrific?

Any other weak points?

The Car Buying folder is your friend.

As may be the 1-5k smoker barge thread, although the high VED on the vast majority is a real thread turn off, so there may be looking, but not experience.

To my astonishment I saw a C6 being used as a taxi in Amsterdam a couple of days ago. Respect! If they can be used as taxis, they can't be THAT expensive to run, can they? Can they...?

Good luck OP, I also love these cars and would to have one but no way I can justify it at the moment. Or probably ever!

The 2.7 is certainly the most common engine, but there are three other options, remember.

3.0 HDi v6 - rocking-horse.
2.2HDi 4-pot - a bit down-specced, but out there in reasonable numbers.
3.0 v6 petrol - people forget about this one completely...

I've not heard of big problems with the 2.7 in PSA stuff - the Disco3 install seems to be where they mostly are, and that's single-turbo rather than twin, probably with other differences.

The main thing we used to do on these as a Citroen main dealer was front bottom ball joints. They’re apparently a roller bearing type and due to the car’s weight, it eats them-they’re not cheap, either!

Little engine trouble with the V6’s-mainly EGR valves on the 2.7.

What you do need is someone who knows what they’re doing with them-if you get an electrical fault they can be quite complex to diagnose.

Oh-if it’s got the heads up display check it works-if the car has had a replacement windscreen quite often the incorrect glass is fitted so the display hasn’t got anything to reflect onto!

Wonderful cars though, I loved driving them-a cliched “proper” Citroen.

Mechanically, isn't the C6 the same as the C5? That will give you another avenue of information (ie most problems experienced with a C5 2.7HDi will also be there on a C6)

Very similar, yes. But even heavier - which is why the ball joints last ten minutes.

As mentioned, finding someone who know's what they're doing on the C6 might be the biggest problem, should anything non-mechanical go wrong.

With the XM and CX, I swear that even main dealer staff would run and hide when they saw one comingbiggrin

I've thought about a C6 - but that's as far as I've ever got - even as a confirmed Citroenist!

My Dad's first XM certainly had gremlins, it would often leave him stranded for no reason (it was an early G-Reg 2.0 company car).

His 2nd one, a 2.1td estate on a K reg had far fewer issues.

Apologies for the XM diversion, please feel free to carry on in a C6 direction.

Posted a similar thread about a year ago....love how they look, proper citroens - I had 2 CX Turbos previously and I miss the wackiness!

Suspension and electrical problems totally put me off :-) when they are properly bargain basement I might risk it, but maybe in a year or so.

Good luck! Great cars

Thanks for all the responses guys smile

So far, from this thread, and from other forums we’ve got:

Regularly disintegrating suspension parts
Electrical Issues
Head gaskets blowing
Weak cooling systems
TPMS issues (see electrical issues)
Seat Motors
£1500 cambelt changes

But but but... I want one.

I'm far more familiar with the C5 but on the whole they are pretty solid cars and the C6 shared a lot.

Only really consistent big issue are leaking power steering racks.

A well specced C5 Exclusive is a criminally underrated car and you need to really want a C6 to justify one over one of those.

To be honest a C5 was my go to next car. Because double glazing, V6 etc...

It’s the quirkiness of the C6 and the cream or brown interior that make me really, really want a C6!

Please buy one; then you can do a blog and maybe crowdfunding we can all chip in on when (not if) something goes bang?

I had the V6 petrol. Apart from the inevitable ball joints which is a pricey job, nothing went wrong in 2 years. I wish I hadn't sold it.

Hi, I own one, a 2.7 diesel on a 07 plate. I first bought it in 2012 - then sold it because i needed the cash but subsequently bought it back!! so I've had it 4 years in total. Absolutely fantastic car which I can't recommend highly enough. I love the looks and it often attracts attention and comments. Not a car to fling around corners but having said that its surprisingly quick and of course the ride is fantastic. As others have said the best thing is to have a garage you can trust on hand but having said that it isn't that complicated with the 2.7 engine also used in Jags. Basic servicing is reasonable and my ownership experience has been excellent. EGR valves can need doing (mine have) but the bill wasn't terrible and i've got a timing belt change coming up (10 years old) but the specialist i go to will do this and associated water pump change for less than £750. Given the age of almost all the C6's on the market you should budget for this.

In my experience the only other things are "niggles" and there is a terrific C6 owners club website that covers the few I've experienced - nothing major. It has the turning circle of an oil tanker so isn't the easiest to park and yes the VED at £520 hurts a bit but it still seems to me that you get so much car for the price in the first place that you can live with this. Buy the "Exclusive" spec because the full leather is a must (and the lane change vibrating seat alert is a hoot!) i promise you will never own anything quite like a Citroen C6.
