Buying a house this year means that when the Golf R goes back in November, it's time to look for something easier on the pocket.

So as I am looking as saving a few quid, I've been comparing lease prices and noting the cost of the maintenance can be fairly steep on some of the cheaper deals - I guess it's where they're making their money.

So, the most sedate option is an A4 Avant SLine 1.4TFSI, which has a £30pm premium on a maintained plan (£720 over the term) so the temptation is to risk it and just pay for interim services (I also have a Leon Cupra R open in another tab which I am trying very hard not to look at...)

But I did wonder if maintenance plans were available from someone other than the lease company? And if anyone has one/ would recommend or not?

Most main dealers offer maintenance plans these days. Can be a good way of spreading service costs into smaller monthly payments.

Not always.

BMW have changed their pack from 5 Years and 50000 miles to 3 years and 36000 which means that you pay for the service pack and possibly only get 2 oil changes out of it.

Check what the interval is and how much you'll use of it.

My last 2 Golf's have needed approx a service a year given my usage profile, so I'm thinking I'd like to cover the bases, but haven't paid for a service in nearly 5 years now so have no idea what a basic service costs (I've also had punctures, luckily covered by the maintenance agreement, phew).

This maintenance charge must include tyres right? Breaking down the maintenance components , I found the larger component to be tyre cover which is the most expensive and so I often take out the full package, but mostly based around covering this.

Check what the £720 includes and compare to the cost of not buying the maintenance as a plan but bit by bit.

Depending on mileage, on a 24-month lease (usually the cheapest on those) it's possible that you will have zero cost if you're on long life service and give the car back a few days before the service is due. Equally you might still be on the original tyres and pads. That's our case on a 24-month Tiguan lease. I actually paid for the 1st LL service at £155 due at month 24 as we are informally extending by 3 months while the replacement arrives.
