Hi All - would be great to hear some people's recommendations of what to go for here.

Have moved to quite a rural location and will be chopping in the M135i soon - it's going to be mega impractical on muddy and icy roads that aren't gritted, although has been great around the B roads the last few weeks with the dryer weather!

Anyway, looking to get something a little older and cheaper that my partner can drive (she has recently passed driving test)

Looking at smallish SUV's or estates with 4x4. First thought has been a Subaru Outback, sp any experience that people have with this car or other recommendations will be great to hear.

Cheers!

Any front wheel drive car would be fine, just avoid low profile tyres.

I was brought up on a diary farm and have worked on farms all my life and would never consider any 4x4. As it happens, on another channel recently, a farmer was saying how he went to a farm show type thing with parking in a field in his Land Cruiser. He ended up having to be towed out by a New Holland tractor because his LC was too heavy and wasn't going where it was pointed, when front wheel drive cars drove in and drove out again. They have tractors on duty in the car park when I went to LAMMA a couple of years ago. I went in my Jazz and drove into the field and at the end of my trip drove back out again without issue.

Also, when I lived in the USA we would work over 35 miles away from tarmac roads at times and the boss refused to buy 4 wheel drive pick ups.

So a Range Rover will probably what you end up with.

Hi Jim if you want a decent small SUV I'd say the 2.5T Kuga would fit the bill.

Cheers for your informative post. If you could have mustered the strengh to leave out the really patonising bit at the end it would have been even better. But you know, if that's what gives you your kicks, each to their own.

Where have you moved to? Chances are a normal hatchback is all you need. Its unlikely that you "need" a 4 wheel drive. "Want" is a different thing completely though.

I had a 3.0Rn outback last year, very capable car that can shift but no centre armrest was annoying and no bluetooth on a 2006 model BUT cheap as chips.

What's the rough budget Jim? Also are you fussed about economy or petrol / diesel?
