Yes, I am bored with the E55 after 3 months of ownership. I quite fancy a 335i with a manual box and a few mods. Newer car, less miles, more turbos. Bad idea?

LOL you can't help yourself, you need to fit a diff to get the best out of one also the Intercooler needs changing as it derates on hot days & when really pressing on.

Then you need to sharpen up the chassis so new shocks & springs etc but you already know that, so just do it beer

An auto gearbox is enough in pretty much any car to cause boredom and frustration, and I've always wanted a C63 with it's glorious 6.2 V8...but the auto ruins it though, for me a manual makes a car.

You can have a boring car with a manual and it can be fun, stick an auto in an exciting car and it immediately becomes boring sadly.

I just miss having a turbocharged car.

To fit a better heat exchanger is a pita as my car has the separate oil cooler, so is in the way to fit a larger one.

A C63 doesn't have a supercharger or a turbocharger so it is of little interest to me.

My dad's recently bought a facelift e93 335i (convertible) with the DCT box and he absolutely loves it. Reckons the DCT is very good. Shame they never did it in the touring or I reckon a 330/335 would be my next car.

What’s wrong with it not having a S/C or T/C
Surely it’s better? Bigger engine, bigger sound, linear acceleration, no lag?

Thats a common misconception, turbo cars can be made very loud, have a linear powerband, and little to no lag. Welcome to the 21st century wink why would you want a bigger engine, more weight and thirstier on fuel

You say can, we are only seeing this recently with triple turbos (bmw) or electric turbos (Audi SQ7). Otherwise most turbos do have lag, don’t rev as high.
The trend of turbos is to aid downsizing which to be fair means Better mpg. Smaller engine, more efficient and lighter
However, a v8 or even v12 AMG.....those engines are special
By the way, all the cars I have ever owned have beeen turbo.....yet I respect non turbo big unit engines for what they are

The thing is if you want power (which the OP does) then you have to put a bigger turbo on the car also if you want top end then you need a bigger turbo (which is why the A45 has a more noticeable top end than say a Golf R but it also has a bit more lag) modern turbo cars have great pick up because they have small housings but they suffer by running out of puff early, there's always a compromise.

My F80 M3 was only 7mpg better on fuel than my CLK63 which wasn't enough to make up for the lack of exhaust (a car sounding like it's farting doesn't work for me) note.

You're right about the exhaust note as the turbo acts as a silencer so by the time you go through the cats you'll be struggling to get some note but it is possible.

I don't mind lag / boost threshold, I just want something that is lighter and on a sensible run returns better than 20mpg.

I dont know, the E55 is going to be the better built car etc but I do love turbos.

I have a thread about my time with an e92, N54 engined 335i on here if you search.

Good cars, but I depends on what you are trying to achieve.

N54 is good for big power as it is a stronger engine, but turbos, well actually the wastegates are problematic, injectors are almost a consumable, water pumps and high pressure fuel pumps will need doing at some point, charge pipes and vacuum lines will need a good going over.

N55 is more reliable but is restricted (compaeritively) in the power it will ultimately give, which may not be an issue depending on what you are expecting. DCT boxes are available on the N55 cars but as you want a manual that doesn't matter.

What's boring? Is it the auto box?

That I could understand. If it's the engine, which I have to say is a pretty unimaginable scenario in my head, then a 335i isn't going to solve that.
