Strange MOT History
Discussion
Looking for a Mk 4.5 Mondeo to replace my ancient Jag. Came across the following:
Mondeo
Seems rather cheap - about £1000 less than others of equivalent age / mileage / spec.. But it's the MOT history that looks weird: The was registered in Nov 2012, but had it's first MOT test just over 1 year later (but at only 20 miles). It then had them annually.
Is it the case that it lay in a field for 2 years before being registered, so while being registered in 2012, it's actually a 2010 car, hence the low price? Is this a common thing?

DVLA say it was both manufactured and first registered in 2012. Just type the number plate in here... https://vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/ViewVehicle
The ad says "demo plus 1 owner" so quite possible that the selling dealer just put the MOT on it after it had stood around for most of it's early life. 20 miles certainly seems low for a demo car.
Alternative theory? It was MOT'd after some repairs following a crash?
Who knows?
If it's any help to you, I have the standard manual gearbox version of that car, the 2.0 TDCi Titanium X (163 engine/power output). It's on about 58,000 miles now, one advisory for suspension bushes after the last MOT, and owes me nothing but regular servicing and tyres/brake pads. Great car, happy all day long on the motorway and A roads, pretty comfortable, and handles well, especially given it's a larger car. Can be a b
h in car parks with narrow spaces, but no more so than similar sized cars. My real world fuel consumption figure is sat around 46 mpg, although it does a lot better on long trips. On holiday journeys where I'm not in a hurry and can avoid queues I get upwards of 800 miles from a tank. Probably the wrong car for the way I live my life now - too many short trips during the week, dropping the wife at work, etc. I bought it in a "commuting 100 mile journeys" mindset, even though I wasn't going to be doing that any more. I've had mine nearly 5 years now, and I don't think I'll be changing it any time soon.

Could it have been a taxi or something? Do they not have to be mot'd from 1 year old?
With only 20 miles on the clock?Sounds like it was sitting in a showroom for that year. No idea why it would have been MoT'd. Maybe the dealer felt it would increase its value when they sold it to the first private owner?
ETA: Ah I see what you mean now. Yes the buyer might have been a taxi driver/company.

IIRC taxi's have an MOT every 6 months rather than annually. Anyone know what the rules would be for emergency / military vehicles e.g undercover police / mi5 etc?.
Some local authorities require them to have an MOT every six months after a certain age, but the gov regs require the MOT at one year. The first MOT wasn't even at 1yr - it was at 3mo... then at 13mo
First reg Nov 12
MOT Feb 13, 20 miles
MOT Dec 13, 16k
MOT Dec 14, 36k
MOT Nov 15, 54k - first one actually required legally.
It wore A2EEC between Aug 15 and Jul 17, still with the first non-dealer keeper - that plate's now on a silver 2015 Merc S350 diesel... which is on its third plate in the current ownership (the other one is now on a silver 2016 730d), and had its first MOT at two years old, six months after they bought it.
My money's definitely on it having been private hire of some flavour.

A2 EEC is on this register of hackney carriage & private hire vehicles - Link to Runnymede.
"Red Ford Mondeo"...MOTs in Staines and Addlestone - which is Runnymede.
Bingo.
The S-class is on there under its original plate, EY15 CUW, too.

Actually, AIUI, the tale of woe related to its replacement, the mk5. His view on the 4.5 is very favourable (and has in no small part influenced me to look for one).https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...
If I've misunderstood this, then thanks for letting me know.

On your last point was it unregistered for two years, find out the VIN number, that may contain the date of manufacture.Mondeo

mk4.5 is a great choice OP
solid workhorse that will go on and on and on.
did i read your getting a Tit X? cracking car and the TitX interior is super comfy(retro fitted that into mine
the mk5 is a pig of a car in comparison which is where all my problems started (when mk4 ownership ended)
