Looking for suggestions on a car for a new driver, who passed his test yesterday, he's 42, so insurance shouldn't be too much of an issue.

He wants an Audi/BMW, something premium, will be driving 80 miles a day to work and back, 6 days a week.

I'm thinking a 120d or something like that. I'm a little worried about depreciation, so perhaps a 3 year old low mileage car with some warranty would be a good idea?

I don't think there are many high mileage lease deals that would be suitable.

Any ideas?

Insurance is likely to be an issue.

I don't really know why, I think he should just get a Golf TDi. But he likes the interiors of Audis and BMWs, seeing as that's where he's going to be spending most of his time. I'd rather a 1 series than a corsa.

I know that you meant him, I still would just tell him to get a diesel Golf, but he wants what is known as a premium brand.

Insurance is a massive issue, I thought it wouldn't be.

He lives in Sheffield, which seems to have screwed him, with 0 NCD, £3,200 on a 120d. It's almost hilarious.

You still made it sound patronising :-)

OP, make him check the insurance sites, even though he's 42 he is a new driver so insurance wills till be a factor.

Also that's a fairly hefty commute for a new driver.
Has he taken any additional tuition? Pass Plus? Motorway tuition?
Driven in rush hour before?

He's driven in India (which is not a great representation of his driving IMO)

I just think he'll have to get the cheapest thing to insure that he can, or go down the route of hiring from Enterprise, like my brother does, and getting cheap
diesels for £7 a day.

He passed his test yesterday, AFAIK, hasn't driven on the motorway, or done anything really.

He wants me to help him find a car that will be suitable and reliable. I think he'll have to come to terms that the insurance is a massive limiting factor.
He'll probably end up getting a fiesta/polo diesel...

It'll be the length of time he's held a licence, rather than location and NCD, although that will factor too. He may have to get a cheap snotter to insure TP only for a year or two.

I would get something cheap and reliable like an old Ford Focus 1.6 petrol, fairly bulletproof and can build up NCD without paying 3k for insurance..added bonus of not worrying about to many marks/dents whilst getting used to driving - as they inevitably happen with new drivers.

Will also save a fortune in depreciation, and then get something nicer in a few years if he wants.

I'd send him in the direction of a Kia C'eed/Pro C'eed they'll have a fair amount of warranty, decent to insure whilst still being nice inside (the hardest part will be getting him to look at one after that he might just be turned) & a decent amount of power for his 80 mile commute & he can put the money he's saved in the bank to go towards the Audi/BMW/Mercedes after he's got a few years no claims.

Or a Volvo C30 it's a compromise but they're a decent car.
