Hi, all,
Hope someone can help me - I'm looking into buying an imported (American) Hyundai Elantra, which is already in the UK.

I'm aware that insurance can be more expensive with imported cars, and that replacing parts could be a problem, but I was wondering whether I should be aware of anything else before I go ahead with making the sale?

Also, as the car model isn't actually available in the UK, what would be the equivalent British model that could be used to replace parts if necessary?
A friend of mine said it would depend on the Elantra's specs and whether parts would be readily available if/when they need replacing, because there is an equivalent model in the British Hyundai range, or would they have to be brought in from the US?

Sorry for all the questions - I've always been warned off imports because of difficulty with replacing parts, but I regularly use Elantras in the US as hire cars and I totally fell in love with them, so I've always said it'd be my first choice if they were available over here. Kind of want to jump at the chance of getting one, but I'm wary of biting off more than I can chew and getting stuck with a money pit that drains all my finances.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Has it been properly imported and registered in the UK? So it has a UK plate and a V5C etc?

As long as it has the V5C then treat it as a normal car purchase.

Why? The i40 looks almost the same and is pretty much the exact same size, probably heavily related. If you did buy it then parts are usually easy to get either from Korea (often far cheaper than the UK) or you’ll often find the same parts are in other Kia’s and Hyundai’s.

Though seriously, why? The European model (the i40) is the better and easiest choice.
