VW Arteon or Skoda Superb. Any good?
Discussion
I've been looking at some of the good lease deals around at the moment with regards to my next car. Needs to be family-friendly, practical, comfortable, quick and preferably petrol but not too heavy on fuel. I was initially looking at the deals available on 3-Series (M Sport) naturally but I saw a black VW Arteon for the first time the other day and I thought it was stunning and although the 3-Series is a solid choice, I'm always more attracted to the leftfield option. Doing a bit more research, I understand that there are some pretty decent lease deals available on them right now and that you can get a 280hp 2.0 TSI with 4MOTION, which piques my interest. Are the cheap lease deals available on this version or is it just the lesser powered FWD version?
Also, I have yet to read any reviews from owners. How do they drive and what are they like to live with compared to say a 3-Series?
Another leftfield alternative which I think is smart but not as striking as the VW is the Skoda Superb Laurin & klement, which I see is also available with the same powertrain and I have seen pictures of a black one with a beige interior, which looked really nice. I don't know whether there are any cheap lease deals on these cars though.
I've had a few VWs in the past and always respected the Golf, particularly the hot models but most of their stuff, such as the Passat seem pretty worthy but dull (and only available in diesel in the case of the Passat). When I was a kid, the only car that Skoda made was the Estelle, so they have certainly come a long way and I never thought that they would be on my radar! I've admired a few Skodas over the years, especially the Fabia/Octavia vRS and the Yeti but never got around to buying one.
So, any thoughts on these two, which would best meet my criteria and what are they like to drive. Are there any more mid-size saloons/hatches that I should consider on a competitive lease deal?

The best Arteon deals on on the petrol 190DSG in Elegance and Rline trim. The very good deals are rumoured to be about to be pulled, so be quick. Sarah Carlton at Inchcape Cheltenham seems to do the lowest prices out there.
The Skoda Superb is often available at competitive prices, and looks a decent car to me, but I have never driven one.
There are also good deals on the Audi A4 presently, but seemingly only on the 1.4 TFSi models with manual gearboxes.

OK thanks. I assume you have an Arteon. Do you like it? Is it a good drive? Yeah, I had heard about the cheap deals on the A4 but it doesn't really appeal to me as much as the 3-Series/Arteon/Superb and I was leaning towards an auto and would prefer more power. The amount of standard kit attracted me, plus the fact that autos are on offer, which would normally cost a lot more.
I have a 65 plate Superb 2 litre Tdi in SE-L spec, 24 months old and I've covered 61k in that time
It's a brilliant motorway cruiser and the adaptive cruise is great (standard on both cars). One thing to bear in mind, especially with technology moving so quick is that the Superb feels a life cycle behind what the Arteon will be like. You can't get the Digital dash and the headlights will be xenon against LED in the VW.
If they were the same cost per month, it wouldn't hesitate to go for the VW. It will feel a step above the Skoda (as seen in the RRP) and you'll get slightly better tech, not necessary more toys overall.
Overall reliability has been good and it's cost buttons to run, apart from fuel! Only had the front tyres changed once and the pads / discs are still original. Admittedly, that will depend on your journeys and driving style, I do a 440 mile roundtrip once per week, all motorway so I'm very easy on the car. Measured Mpg is just short of 56 (the cars in my profile).

Thank you. You make a good point. Yes, the Superb looks like a very nice car for 2015 but the VW looks much more futuristic and I guess the tech reflects this too. I think that I would probably favour the VW over the Skoda unless the Skoda was significantly cheaper. From the figures that people have quoted on the VW Arteon lease thread, an equivalently-specced 3-Series looks a good 100 pound per month dearer? It's a brilliant motorway cruiser and the adaptive cruise is great (standard on both cars). A VW what, well advertised!? Has it replaced the Phaeton? Why does it have a Golf steering wheel? I'd feel like I was driving a heavier Golf, kids would be comfy though!
I believe that it's the replacement for the Passat CC/CC but they cleverly decided not to link it to the Passat brand this time.
So it's a Passat then? Hands down the most boring car I've ever driven (and I've owned two Allegros AND two Metros).
Some blind idiot drove into the side of my C4 VTR+ and due to lack of suspension parts I put 15k on the courtesy Passat in about 4 months, bored I was, impressed the hire car company was not.

I'm not sure if any mid-size hatch/sedan this side of an M3/C63 AMG/Giulia Quadrifoglio is really that exciting to drive is it? At least it's practical, looks striking and probably very comfortable, which is what I primarily look for in a family bus at the end of the day...and not being an SUV/MPV/crossover for me is also a bonus! Agree. I'm sure a Passat, Arteon, A4 & Superb all drive pretty much the same, ie dull. I'm more concerned about comfort & toys than 'driving dynamics'. Matters naff all when sitting at 75mph on the M1.
I've got an Arteon Elegance, had it about a month now. Came from an Audi A5.
Had 3 A5's and the last one was a bit of a disappointment - quite a few problems leading to garage visits. Don't think I've ever spent as long in courtesy cars!
Quality of finish/switchgear etc. doesn't feel quite as good as the Audi. Satnav is awful compared with the A5. Car drives well, I think it's quieter than the Audi, but my last A5 always had a few annoying noises the garage couldn't track down.
Having said all that, I'm enjoying the Arteon. Took it in for a check up after 1000km last week. The salesman said that mine was still the only one they'd sold (I ordered in July). Said it was too expensive for a VW, but if it had an Audi badge it would sell very well!!
Never had a Skoda Superb so can't help with that.

I have the new a5 coupe and when looking at a golf with my mate saw the Artoeon thought it looks just like the a5 just with vw badges. Had 3 A5's and the last one was a bit of a disappointment - quite a few problems leading to garage visits. Don't think I've ever spent as long in courtesy cars!

Sat in it and looked pretty similar, haven’t driven one but presumably it is very similar to the audi badged version.
