I've been thinking about what to purchase as the weekend car and I've narrowed it down to these two with a budget of around £8-9k.

Things I'm looking for: V8, auto, 0-60 in around 5s, good options list, good noise & a bit of luxury!

These two are the only two that really appeal to me, partly because they tick my boxes and partly because I've always liked them both since they were released.

At present I'm swaying towards the BMW as it is the better drivers car, has a bit more kit and a coupe makes more sense for the weekend to me as its less practical (that's what weekend cars are for eh?).

What are peoples thoughts about the two cars - has anyone driven both?

6 series really needs an aftermarket exhaust as the OEM one is too quiet and doesn't give a 'proper' V8 burble.

Also - and this sounds stupid - but make sure you get one with the optional cup holder as there is nowhere big enough to hold a can/bottle/etc - a minor thing which is actually a PITA after a while smile

Also look out for the auto boxes on the 6 - meant to be sealed for life but benefit from an oil change around 70-80k - when test driving - make sure you keep your foot in all the way through all the gears - if the box is failing you will get a 'hard' change between some of the gears which can throw an error on the dashboard. Also test it at a steady 30mph - if it feels like it's hunting or unsure which gear to be in, its a sign the gearbox needs major work - approx £2000-£2500

Good choice to have though

Not an auto (or luxury), but I'd go for a Monaro instead.

What's the reason for those stipulations anyway considering it's a weekend car?

Without driving either and understanding that at that age it could well be knackered, but the Jag by miles.

If a coupe makes more sense, why not an xkr rather than a xjr?
