I have just passed my driving test. I would like to buy a used car. Max budget is £3500. I need the car to drive to work and general social activities. I predict some long distance travel about once or twice a month. I'd like a 4 door, smallish car that is fuel efficient and quite good looking. Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated!

Daughter has a Hyundai i10 which she is very happy with. Daily commute and couple of 200 mile journeys per month with no issues. Bought about a year ago, 2009 plate, 45k miles, less than £2.5k

You will probably need 1-2K just for insurance.

Check on comparison sites to check any cars that are have affordable premiums.

If you're going to be doing a couple of long journeys a month I'd recommend the Punto with the 1.9 diesel they're good on insurance, come in well under budget & are a very reliable car but they're hard to find in four door form.

Petrol wise I'd say look for something turbocharged that way you keep small engine efficiency whilst having a capable motorway car.

The Mazda3 is another good call but it has a 1.6 engine.

Astra SRI 1.4 (these are GVFM at the moment)

Kia C'eed

All of the above fit your requirements but as ever insurance will dictate which way you go.

Does the £3.5k budget have to cover insurance too?
