Freelanders seem quite cheap? They don't seem to have the land rover tax that old defenders have picked up, but that might be because they're prone to a lot of faults?

The original hyundai santa fe is a lot of car for little money, but is quite big, not really a hardcore off roader, and its appearance is a taste that few have aquired.

Also from owning another model hyundai, I can say that whilst well built, spares were hard to get hold of.

the Daihatsus will be at but rust by now, worth looking at an old Forester or Outback. I bought a 99000m 2.0 52 plate Forester for £1400 3years back, now on 117000m, used for attending car rallies, collecting logs and now work as my lease ended in May. £305 tax is the main downside. 30 mpg not too bad. Upsides are i leave it parked at the station at lockerbie if I am away without worry, the smelly wet dog does not matter and the idiots in car park who cannot open their doors without bashing the neighbouring car annoy me less too.

Suzuki Jimny? Not only can you buy one, but for £3k you could throw enough bits on one to turn it into a little offroad monster, would be my go to choice provided you don't have to tow trailers or children.
