Hi

What car (estate or 4x4) would fit 3 bikes in the back with the back seats still up?

Ideally prefer not to take wheels etc off but happy to pile the bikes on top of each other.

Thanks

Ps answer is not an A6 Allroad!

Assuming you have no demand for seats 6-7-8, you would be looking at a full size MPV. Toyota Previa probably.

Chevy Suburban or similar. Can’t think of a UK car that can do what you want.

I’ve managed to get three people, three road bikes (front and back wheels off) plus luggage in the back of a Range Rover but I had to fold down part of the back seat to make it work.

I'm sure you though about your requirements before asking this question.

But can I ask: how often will you be transporting 3 bikes? It's a lot of vehicle to be driving round/ paying for when you don't have 3 bikes on board.

And my focus can transport 3 adult bikes fairly easily with the addition of £50 worth of ebay roof bars and bike racks.

Just curious.

My xc90 fits two but only by taking the front wheels off ( and my wife is small). A tow bar fitted bike carrier is probably the way to go.

Even with the front wheel off I couldn't fit an adult bike in an E61 without dropping the back seat. Same in a 2014 Galaxy and my current 2015 Touareg. I think you'd need a LWB Transporter or similar to be able to use any rear seats.
Roof carrier or tow bar carrier.

This image gives an idea of the problem.

With the wheels on a bike you have something between 5 and 6 feet long. That’s longer than a car’s luggage space is wide.

Putting them in lengthways just gives you a different problem: some cars have 6 feet of cargo space with the rear seats down, but not with them up.

And you can make bikes narrow with their pedals off, stem rotated on the steerer and bars rotated down but that is a PITA which if you are looking at keeping the wheels on you won’t want to do.

If you need to move three bikes and you have an Allroad, I’d probably look at a rack or roof mount of some sort.

I would imagine you'd have to look at some kind of big van with seats in (Transit/Caravelle etc) or possibly a Merc V Class as according to Carwow that has the biggest boot (3rd row seats removed) of any car on sale in litres, although that's also a van with seats.

Ford Ranger. That’ll do it in the same way as the picture upthread. Just walked past a RHD 67 plate one. Didn’t realise they were sold over here.

Not ideal unless you actually want a pick up truck in the first place though...

Best bet is a VW Caddy Life with farmost 2 seats removed, so essentially a 5 seater with a van sized boot. The far rear seats can be folded down or taken out completely

It's silly the amount of cars that cannot accommodate fairly simple family requirements like this.

I can fit my bike with front and back wheels off horizontally in my accord estate plus two junior bikes. Maybe could get three medium adult bikes (wheels off) in depending on geometry.

Roof racks or rear boot hangers tow bar fitnents etc are a hassle. Easier to throw things in boot.

No chance of getting bikes in any car with wheels on. Some kind of van conversion which doubles as family car would be good. But then you have increased running costs which I don't think people should have to put up with.

Should imagine a Defender 130 with a Truckman top would be up to the job.
