Need to be Responsible
Discussion
Well, it's a happy, exciting and terrifying time for me at the moment as not only will I be in the process of moving out very soon, I will also be starting a family!
With this in mind the responsible thing for me to do is sell my Honda Prelude and buy something safe, easy to drive, economical and spacious for the girlfriend and the little one - all within 2k.
My first initial thoughts are something n/a and Japanese such as a Civic (FN shape), however much to my girlfriends dismay I would like an estate as it would come in handy for the move and lugging around furniture. This thread has probably been repeated numerous times however I would appreciate any suggestions for reliable, economical, cheap family wagons/load luggers.

Congratulations! I have first hand experience of the Mondeo and Focus estate, both of which are within that price range and decent enough.
Of cars I don't know anything about personally, autotrader suggests you could get VW Golf/Passat, Vauxhall Astra around 10 years 150,000 miles at that price.

/ThreadJob done. In that price range a Mondeo will probably be the youngest and freshest thing you can get, and it actually drives bloody well. I had the 2.0 16V N/A petrol and it was a great engine, certainly much more lively than the 2.4V6 A4 that I foolishly replaced it with.
The only problem with the MK3 Mondeo is finding something to replace it with (unless you're adding a lot of cash to the pot).
For reference I ended up getting my Mondeo back after buying the Audi, then eventually replaced it with an S60. If you can get a V70 in your price bracket then that's worth a look, but for cheap, reliable family motoring I think the Mondeo will be easier to find.
Congratulations, the car choices are pretty decent but if you go off to the less popular cars you can bag yourself a very decent car:
Mondeo this is the obvious & good choice.
