Looking to get a mk3 Mondeo 2.0 tdci
Discussion
So I'm either looking to get a mk3 Mondeo 2.0 tdci with high mileage or a Passat with high mileage because for what I need these two cars fit the bill (mostly motorway with occasional a roads) so out of the two which ones essentially going to be the better option on banger money?(£750) also are there any alternatives I should think about? Read almost every post about these cars nut still unsure Haha!
I'll be selling my 55 plate 2.2tdci in the new year. It's done 231k and rising and a full Ford history with invoices to prove.
Been utterly reliable other than consumables and I did refresh the suspension with bilsteins etc a few years ago. I'll probably want around £1400 for it.
For £750 You might get lucky or you might get a dog.

Some would say £1400 is a bit rich for that mileage but better pay a rich price for a good car than a few hundred quid less for a dog. Been utterly reliable other than consumables and I did refresh the suspension with bilsteins etc a few years ago. I'll probably want around £1400 for it.

Mk3 Mondeos were probably the best, such a shame so many got abused with poor maintenance.
Good to know thanks for the advice guys! So what other cars should I be considering? Realistically this car has to last 4 months with about 2000 miles a month that's all, I looked at a mk3 Mondeo ghia x with 170000 miles for 600 had partial history but most importantly had the dmf and clutch changed but it's a bit tatty in looking at a Passat later today with 180000 but full history and mostly motorway miles so I'll let you guys know! My previous car was a Mondeo st220 but I'm only 20 do fuel and insurance was definitely premium
I'd say for the price point that you are aiming for, a Mondeo is the only sensible solution. I was looking at this recently and for a similar spec Passat, the price was double and I personally don't think they are worth twice as much as the equivalent Mondeo, I will not pay VW tax.
Ghia or Ghia X will be the ones to aim for IMHO.

Always good to look at the MOT history to get an idea of how a car has been treated.Weak points for the Mondeo are rear subframe bushes, DMF and possibly injectors/fuel pump if it hasn't had fuel filter changes. Has to be OEM filters too - the cheap ones on Ebay are rubbish and cause all sorts of issues.
Mk3 Mondeo's ride and handle brilliantly - you will know if you have a pup within 30 secs of driving it!

Yeah, might not get that but it does run and drive brilliantly, and it's clear it is a well looked after car! Didn't mean this to be an advert btw - won't be up for sale for a few months Mk3 Mondeos were probably the best, such a shame so many got abused with poor maintenance.

Always been a ford guy had a ka,focus,st170 and st220 so more favoured towards the Mondeo plus I've driven a few so I know all about their driveability but always been told vag engines are the one for reliability! My dad had a passat pd130 highline which went to 260000 before he moved it on! I'm open to other cars I just have experience with these sorta motors more! Probably should of said I'm a budding mechanic so any diy/minor mechanical work can be done by me!
One of these:

If you can find a low miler close to you they're as reliable as the Ford & you'll get a lower mile one than the Ford but I rate the Ford as the better car.

Cheers for the alternative heard they're pretty reliable so looking into them, I need a saloon otherwise I'd also be considering seat leon/golf however I'm looking at seat toledos but they're similarly Priced to the others and I'm not huge on them! Also looked at boras but they're way more expensive to insure than the Passat and Mondeo for me for some reason
I had a Gold (ish) Mondeo last year for around the same money and spec. Was a Zetec 130 TDCi I think. Quick enough and didn't let me down. If you are servicing it yourself, the fuel filter is in the engine bay, which makes it very easy to change compared to on the chassis rail!
Injectors are expensive as they need coding to the car. Generally cheap to get bits for it and easy enough to fix. My bonnet locking mechanism snapped in the previous owners tenure, so the chap cut away the plastic shaft and dremelled a slot in the lock so it could be opened with a screwdriver, apparently a common problem.
It had an mp3 plug in the glovebox, climate control, cruise. I found the MPG reading was always out. But managed to get 48mpg average out of it. Comfy seats and did about 30,000 commuting miles, needed to put a thermostat on it (easy to get to and change), service, tyres and rear droplinks. Solid it at 160,000 and still going according to the MOT. Total cost of that was maybe £150.
They're old and starting to decline, so people are skipping maintenance on it. As a previous poster said, they drive really well if in good shape, check the usual points, check for rust on the doors (facelifts were better I think), check everything works and listen to the engine on start up, hesitation under load and any undue smoke. Mine coal-rolled everything everywhere but didn't seem to have a problem.

Thanks for the info! I know all about he risks of a Mondeo but they're so nice in every aspect for me! Considering the car hasn't got to last roo long I may just hunt down a decent one and when I can get a lower mileage option! Would I better off looking for the tdci or tddi? I know the latter is more agricultural and less refined but is more reliable but not every single tdci is a bomb waiting to go off i guess

I've heard the 2.2 was more prone to probs than the 2.0 but personally I think they both are! Has anyone owned a 406 hdi? Know about the problems but don't know what they're like to own!
406 HDI is awesomely reliable and long life. Had 3 in the family, and all went to over 300k without any issues whatsoever. 2.0 hdi is the one to go for, either guise, but the 90 bhp will need mapping to about 130. My mapped one ran from 56k to 324k on the same clutch, injectors, etc etc etc. Lent it to someone who drove it into a ditch after 6 miles.
