Any car at that price point is a lottery TBH, especially a leggy diesel. My personal experience is that the earlier 1.9 VAG TDI engines run and run as long as serviced properly, and "the internet" seems to agree, but at that price point I'd just be looking for the best condition, best driving example of anything.

Yeah I understand for this money my options are very limited but you're right! Just looking at that body work and checking all history and seeing how my search goes!

This is solid advice.

Go for a car with as many stamps in the service book as you can find, and that doesn't smoke like a Spanish teenager.
