There dont seem to be any. The cars available are either too small / basic ( Elise, MX5) or too big, fast and often lardy ( F type, F430, ) or hairdresser cars TT, Z4 etc.

All I want is a one tonne car with 300 bhp and no electronics other than engine and ABS. No power soft tops - why are they needed. No vents rising out of the dash. I can operate my own seat thank you. No radio because in a decent sports car you shouldnt be able to hear one.

I had an Elise for 7 years but sadly I am too stiff in my old age to easily get in and out. I had a 430 but who needs 190 mph and 16mpg and Ferrari service and parts costs. Maybe I can afford it but that doesnt make it sensible does it?

The manufacturers seem to have vacated the middle ground. The nearest to what I want looks like being the new TVR. Any other suggestions?

Must be an open 2 seater by the way.

Closest I can think is Morgan, or, if they’re back from the brink - Weismann (sp?).

An Evora convertible might fit the bill if they ever actually release the thing?

The obvious answer is a classic of some sort though. By and large, modern cars just aren't designed to do what you're after.

Last generation Boxster Spyder gets close, perhaps? Wiesmann and Morgan both make pretty much what you're after, but they're not cheap. Something like a decent Cobra replica?

ETA: Making a car that meets modern regulations which is significantly bigger than the MX5 and weighs anything close to a tonne isn't easy.

The new TVR isn’t an open 2 seater. The obvious answer is an old TVR.

1-tonne cars don't really exist anymore, other than the Elise/Alfa 4C etc. Blame crash regs.

1300kg is the new tonne. Get there and you are looking Evora/Boxster/etc, but alas, most drivers want creature comforts in their sports cars.

Buy yourself a TR7 and put an ls7 in it with a 6 speed. 500 hp in a pretty stiff shell would see you sorted. They have lots of leg room as well.

Get an MX5 with a V8 in it or get one with a BBR turbo conversion or for me the sharper choice would be a supercharged S2000.

Haven't you just described a Chimaera or Griffith? (no ABS though)

Honda S2000. There are a few of the very last about with low miles. Rumoured to have dodgy engines though.
Honda were not after the badge snobs but the sports car purist rather than those who couldn't move a seat themselves or wanted a fancy ICE set-up.. OK the hood was electric & it needs thrashing to really make it go ( fit a sports exhaust & you will LOVE thrashing it ! ).

An Alfa 4C (a remap could see close to 300bhp) or an Exige V6 are about the only things currently made that come close. Both slightly easier to get in and out of than early Elises, the 4C more so.

Z4 ... 3.0si 265bhp 0-60 5.6s
Z4 ....MR 344bhp 0-60 5s

Straight six, normally aspirated, manual gearbox

They are not hairdressers cars .. they are powerfully built barber’s cars

I thank you x

I just checked the classifieds, and it would appear they are still available? hehe

See the bit where he says 'manufacturers have vacated the.....'. He's talking new cars. If he was happy to delve back into the realms of time, every car would be a possibility wink

Yupp. My vote would be for a boosted MX-5. Whether that be turbo'd or supercharged, done already professionally or get it done yourself.

After you've had a TVR...the Z4M feels like it's always carrying a powerfully built barber around with it, it's a lard arse car in comparison! biggrin

Nobody "needs" a 190mph car, but then nobody "needs" a 300bhp two seater one tonne convertible either (which is surely going to be a 150+mph car anyway?). Sports cars are rarely bought because of need.

From your posts, it never seemed you really gel'd with your 430 and you seemed more concerned about what the costs might be than what they actually were. Which is a shame, because something more classic would tick many of your boxes - 348 for example is a fun car with ABS and little other driver aid - on the other hand, I wouldn't pay current prices for them.

I'd echo most other comments and say something like TVR seems the most likely - or something classic, but you will lose reliability and practicality.
