So I've been interested in classic cars since I was 8 or so. And I'm getting to the age to get the first car now and I'm thinking that I Golf MK2 would be a good first car for Britain, Am I wrong? or should look at buying one, probably something like this one :

https://www.gumtree.com/p/volkswagen/volkswagen-go...

would this be a good option or should I try and find something a bit newer,
Thanks, Lawrence.

I had a 5 door mk2 golf driver as my second car

it was ace, although a 1.8 don't expect it to be quick compared to say a modern 1.6.

But as a car its great. i'd have one. get good tyres on it, I'm not actually sure it will have ABS ??? so keep that in mind if your driving too close and someone slams on your not as likely to get away with the error as in a modern car.
Also wont be amazing on fuel.

However easy to work on, fun to drive, look great and not a bad size.

That particular advert is overpriced in my opinion.

A mk2 driver will be a brilliant first car though, excellent to learn maintenance on!

I was thinking it was a bit steep on the price but it looks like a clean car. Thanks for the advice!

If you want a "modern classic" as your first car, why not? There's no law saying you need to have something newer, so do what floats your boat. It sounds to me that you'd hate driving something like a Citroen C1, Toyota Aygo, or whatever. Life's to short to drive cars that don't make you smile.

The only thing I would say is that cars from the '80s and early '90s are nowhere near as safe as modern cars, especially in the event of an accident. As long as you keep this in mind, and drive accordingly, you'll be fine. smile

I had a 3dr one of them from '96 to 02. I loved it. It's a very old car now and you'll need to get down the gym, the steering is bloody heavy!

The Civic I replaced it with was in a different league as a car to own.

My first car was a mk2 Golf. Mine was a 3 door 1.3L dating from 1988.

This was in 1996, and the car was a complete shed then! Door seals knackered so leaked water into the cabin, regularly ran on three cylinders, clutch was awful, early stop start system (ie it cut out at every junction I stopped at), electrical gremlins flattened the battery and the final nail in the coffin was it spat a load of black smoke through the heating matrix into the cabin whilst I was driving to work one morning.......

I have fond memories (because it was my first car, bit of independence etc.) but it needed constant attention in my 9 months of ownership.

Just go in with your eyes wide open, get breakdown cover and don't fall for the VW its reliable st!!

I now have a 1981 VW T25 and to be fair it has been really reliable compared to my old Golf. So I may have had a real bad one!!

we still own a mk2...great cars and easy to fix , plenty of online help for sorting faults etc

just dont buy a rusty one as that will be an ongoing chore keeping it back , keep it serivced and the salt washed off over winter and it will look after you
