Its for the wife but still for me lol. Has to be around £20-25k. Has to be 5 door and could only narrow it down to these two that I liked. I would also be planning to re-map both.

Which would you choose?

I'm guessing you mean Golf R, rather than Gold R?

IMO M135i or M140i is the only way to go! laugh

M135i. The Golf is dull.

What did you think when you test drove them?

I thinking the Gold will beat the BMW for residuals and running costs.

This. The Golf is a hot hatch, albeit a mature one rather than a yobbish one. The BMW is more of a shrunken GT car. They have quite different characters and also differ quite a lot in terms of their interior feel.

They are both excellent cars but only your wife and you can decide what’s best for the two of you by getting out there and driving them. There’s no wrong answer here.

Not driven a 140 but have driven a 235i and had a golf R for two years.

Felt underwhelmed in the 235i,it was good to drive and fast but it just felt like a fast rep-mobile,there was nothing to distinguish it from lower versions bar the two exhausts.

The golf felt a bit more punchy old school power delivery, and had a lot more presence especially in lapis blue. It was more boy-racerish.

Interior wise - golf was nothing special,BMW was nicer, the golf will be better equipped

If it's for the wife, the BMW is probably the better choice, although the golf r does have the safety net of 4wd

I absolutely loved my golf and would have another in a heartbeat

Are these still desirable to the great unwashed? i hate saying it but for a car your wife is driving a lot this factor needs some consideration

Good shout, hadn't realised decent RS3's were available at that money! Having said that Chris Harris did prefer the M135i when he tested the two back to back.....

It's just that engine that swings it away from the BMW for me especially after a remap like the OP is planning, also (although for me I buy the car I want rather than worry about resale) the residuals will be stronger for the RS3.

OP all three are good cars personal preference will decide which way you go but do add the RS3 to your list.

I would go for the BMW. Nicer engine and slightly less likely to be stolen.

Golf R.

Lots of gadgets, incredible traction in dry or wet, and a couple of quick tweaks will get you 400bhp.

RS3 would be a good choice, but the previous generation is quite old and slow.

Slow? with 335bhp to play with & 400bhp is truly just a map away slow is not an accusation I'd throw at the RS3 smile

If it’s for your wife, I think she’d prefer the golf. I’ve haven’t driven a golf r but I have driven a gti and it was a lot easier to drive than the m135i, it’s also a lot bigger inside.

I’d say it depends on the spec really, if you find an m135/140 with the hk electric seats & pro nav, it’s definitley a winner if it’s cheaper than the golf, my mum had a 120d m sport and bar the xenons & dab, it came with absolutely nothing as standard and the standard sound system was atrocious!

If you’re spending over 20k in a 1 series, it can either go 2 ways, it’s either going to plummet in value as the new model is due around next year I think or it will hold its value due to the newer shape being front wheel drive, I’m not sure what engine they’ll put in the hot one but it’s likely the outgoing 1 series will be the last straight 6 offered.

Just remember the BMW will be absolutely hopeless in the snow or icy conditions. In the wet it'd be quite lethal if the driver has no proper experience. This being PH thinks anything 4wd and turbocharged is boring. Surprised the mx5 hasnt been mentioned tbf

It won't be useless the only way it would be are if the person driving was incapable of driving!
