A car to commute Cardiff to Bristol
Discussion
Hello all,
Ive picked up a job in central Bristol and I live in Cardiff, I'm trying to think of ways to make the commute a bit more cost effective. I have a Renault traffic that is my works van, problem being the is the bridge cost and its not the best on fuel. A train or bus is out of the question as I will need to bring tools and other bits and bobs back and forth each day. The van will be used maybe once a week. I'm thinking a 1.4 tdci fiesta as its seemingly good on fuel, the bridge toll is half of the van and its only £30 tax, plus its small so parking should be easier, Ill need this for maybe 6 months. Is there any other car I'm missing? Any ideas/advice will be gladly received, cheers all.

Could you not use the van to drop off all the tools and then commute by train?
Where is the location roughly, the M32 at anytime is a royal pain as is central Bristol.

Finzels reach? It's about 10 mins from temple meads I think. The guy I work with just ain't keen on anything other than driving. Plus going between there an Filton to another job means trains could be a mare 😟
If you don't need the back seats can you not get a Fiesta Van? im pretty sure they are still a 1.4tdci.
And not knowing your trade will you not get your tools in that and then maybe get rid of he big van?
Side note I had a 1.4tdci Fiesta (car) and yes its not going to set the world alight it would always return a good 60mpg.
And if you chip it you get 90 bhp instead of the 68bhp.

I know a company who are based in Bridgend and have loads of contracts in Bristol, they use Citroen Bullingo multispace which have rear windows and are classed as cars for the bridge.
Alternatively Astras are dirt cheap and pretty spacious in the boot, or focus or b5 passats all seem to be the chosen cars of tradesman I meet on site
What’s the budget? I would want something with ACC personally.

I need to keep the van for other jobs closer to home annoyingly. Dont all vans big or small get classed the same on the tolls? I should check. The fiesta seems a good short term solution. And not knowing your trade will you not get your tools in that and then maybe get rid of he big van?

Around £1500 max I'd say. I was looking at Astra's as well, they are all much of a muchness I guess. I'll look into the Citroen, I didn't think of those.Alternatively Astras are dirt cheap and pretty spacious in the boot, or focus or b5 passats all seem to be the chosen cars of tradesman I meet on site

Read the bottom you are correct, it would seem if you remove the seats it then becomes catergory 2 which is £13 odd.
Stick to the car idea.
Another Rip off

Something like this would be a good call throw the seats out tint the windows & you basically have a small van that you don't have to pay as much for at the toll.

That’s at the end of 2018, and no doubt it OP is a trade that the job will be completed or at least nearing completion by then. Any older diesel estate should be decent, if not a Astra something with a VW PD lump like a mk2 Octavia will give plenty of MPGZ
