Hi

I was looking at this 1.2 Corsa 2010 reg. I would usually stay away from an add like this with the milage being so high but these forums have me thinking in the, if they're motorway miles and it's been properly serviced then don't turn your nose up at it, way. It has done 130k miles but has the full service history. They all look like motorway miles;

2013 33k
2014 56k
2015 76k
2016 97k
April 2017 119k
Today 130k

The last advisory in April of concern is;

Advisory notice item(s)
rear bumper slightly damaged, nearside rear.
Nearside Rear tyre slight uneven tread wear
coolant seepage around coolant pipe/ thermostat housing.

But this is going to come with a new MOT if I purchase it, it's priced at £1900 and the add is in the image below.

Is this because you don't like Vauxhalls/Corsas, the milage or the advisories?

Thanks for getting back to me

1 lady owner....

they still use that like as if its a good thing. One lady owner = when was the last time the oil was checked? Last service. Oh it has 5 gears, I thought it was a 4 speed etc

I'm a big fan of buying cars with big miles for very good prices.

But, 130k for a 1.2 is very big miles, and most Corsas will have done far fewer miles. So I'd expect it to be much cheaper than a typical miles example. And the "One previous owner" "lady owner since 2012" makes it particularly obvious that "one previous owner" means 2 owners in total.

So I'd want a very good price to even bother to view it. But I'd also not dismiss it out of hand.

A high milage friend smile thank you for your reply

I'm getting put off it atm, I'll just have to keep on looking, I'm budgeting 2k but only have an auto license frown everything is a 'rare automatic' even though every bloody manufacturer offers them on near enough every model. It's a joke

Sorry, I thought my silly reply would raise a smile, then get lost in a sea of genuinely helpful replies.

Personally, I wouldn't drive a Corsa if it were that or feed my trouser snake to a rabid dog. Godawful cars in just about every way.

Given your budget and mileage requirements (perhaps they're not requirements?), Autotrader alone spits out 25,000 results. The vast majority of which are in some way better or more interesting than a bloody Corsa with the motor from a Moulinex Magimix lurking under the bonnet like a big lump of snot floating on the surface of a pint of cold sick.

For your money, you could have a Jaguar XJ 3.2 V8 in X308 flavour (a car I actually own today). You could have a BMW 330Ci with electrically powered this and steering wheel mounted that. You could have an Audi TT, if you'd like the neighbours to think you've done well to hide your homosexuality for all these years.
You could have a TR7 or an Isuzu Trooper, depending on whether you'd rather spend your weekends drinking beer with silt at the bottom and growing a beard, or burying the dismembered bodies of your latest victims.
You could have a Lexus LS430 if you're planning on qualifying as an accountant.
You could have any one of 527 available Mercedes-Benz, if you are David Davis and could do with currying favour with Frau (nae Dr) Merkel ahead of #Bregzit talks next month.
You could have almost any car in the world, including your pick of 1281 Vauxhall Corsas, if you're either insane or an habitual self-flagellator or both.

The choice is yours.

In the real world of fuel consumption, insurance and parts prices some people choose to buy something other than a Jag, Mercedes or BMW.

If I was after a small automatic for £2k I'd be heading first off for Japanese/Korean.

Civic/Corolla/Jazz, or something Mazda.

Or just maybe an Audi A3/BMW 3 series compact.

Astras and Focuses will be cheaper/less popular than Corsas and Fiestas.

Don't worry too much about age, buy on condition, and how good you feel about the seller. I'd expect there to be a good choice of private sale well cared for small autos wherever you are in the country.

There, that's narrowed down your choices hasn't it...

Auto Corsa with 130k miles? No. Just no.

If you need a small auto you need Japanese, Honda Jazz or Civic would fit the bill I'm sure.

Do not buy a high miles automatic Corsa, or indeed an automaticCcorsa of any description. You will regret it, that Easytronic gearbox is a fragile and hateful pile of junk. I don't hate Corsa's, but I do hate that gearbox!

I am looking at focuses currently as all the jap cars are too reliable and popular with many of the UKs population that puts the price up too

I think the focus or astra is the only way to go tbh

With any car components have a finite lifespan

I bought a cheap 2008 polo bluemotion with 118k 3 years ago for £2650.

My rationale was a 60k miler was circa £1k more and I'd still need to do the cambelt etc

I spent £1200 doing cambelt, brakes etc etc so that it was mechanically sound and I could feel confident on long trips.

It's been faultless for nigh on 3 years and 20k until the turbo went this year necessitating a bill for £1800. On the positive side the new turbo will outlast the car

TL/DR

Higher mileage cars can be a bargain but also have the propensity to throw up big bills. Make sure the discount you get for higher miles is adequate enough to allow for this

My partner has an auto only licence so I know full well that finding small cheap to run autos is a bit of a struggle. However, I do have experience of the 1.2 Corsa Auto and it's an Easytronic semi-automatic unit - I'm not saying this to be deliberately unpleasant as I do like Corsas but it really is a very poor gearbox. It's jerky, dim witted and slow plus can be very problematic. If you really want a Corsa, seek out a 1.4 with the proper 4/5 speed torque converter (proper) auto.

We have a 2011 Suzuki Swift 1.5 Auto which has been brilliant, it's got 84k on the clock (11 plate) and hasn't put a foot wrong in nearly 4 years. Also, my nan has a 04 plate Micra 1.2 SE Auto which she's had for 10 years now; granted it's only done 42k from new but that also has been an excellent little car. Both are reliable, smooth "proper" autos. I would be looking for a Swift or a Micra every day of the week over a Corsa personally.

I'm picking up a 2005 Toyota Corolla automatic this afternoon as my new runabout car. Cost a bit more than your budget, but I'd look to Toyota as well as Honda for options. As stated above, the gearbox on that Corsa will be a world of pain!

The newer (red) Civic has an i-SHIFT gearbox which is an automated manual. I would strongly recommend avoiding those.

The older Civic and the Jazz have a torque converter and CVT respectively and would be much better.

Similarly, I'd avoid the 'auto' option on the C1/107/Aygo, as it's again an automated manual and very unreliable.

Nissan Note if you can find one in budget. Back in 2014 we paid £3400 for 58 plate Note 1.6 auto with <20,000 miles, so might be doable. Strong, reliable cars.

The 1.2 engine in the Corsa isn't the best, it's not exactly very powerful, smooth nor reliable and with miles comes timing chain tensioner issues, cams can snap (!) and if they've skipped oil changes or crap oil has been used, they are prone to sludging up. If there's any hint of a rattle I'd walk away and if there isn't, high chances there will be soon so I would echo what has been said, they're not the shrewdest of second hand buys and yes, something Japanese would probably be a safer bet and probably hold it's money better too.
