What do you guys think about the audi tt mk1 225?
Discussion
hello guys i am thinking to buy an audi tt mk1 225 as it is turbo charged and awd and has 225 bhp stock which sounds sweet now i do not like the shape a lot but i do not mind it. However if i do buy it in the future i would buy a bodykit for it maybe the r8 one or the ttrs but im not sure if i will 100% do that now i just want to know what you guys think about this car and if you have owned one how was your experience?
Bought one two weeks ago for 2 grand, its a 225 with 126k up, previous owner had spent a load on fixing stuff, head gasket, driveshaft gaiters, suspension bits, 2 grand spent,

Always wanted one for some reason, I just like them and make no apologies for that, ok its a MK4 Golf underneath but to be fair its a 4wd 225 bhp one, its more of a Audi S3 with no room inside.
My initial impressions,
They are a quality product, things like the wheelarch liners are held on with stainless fasteners, the wheelarches themselves, apart from one tiny bleb are rust free and the whole car feels solid.
It moves ok, nice grunty turbo engine gives a solid shove in the back, not the most revvy engine but has an earthy, old school turbo charm, makes nice whoosy noises and does the odd dump valve/wastegate noise. Will get it remapped and do a few other bits in due course.
It corners well in my opinion, just not exactly telepathic, but certainly effective, bot really experienced the understeer everyone goes on about yet but maybe I am not going that fast.
Interior is great, they last well inside and loads of bits available, so many being broken currently, so much shared with other VW's of the era.
The heated seats are epic, windscreen wipers a bit slow, oem stereo had a tape in it so has been replaced with a BlueTooth one.
Few issues still to sort,
Coolant flush and new thermostat, losing a bit of coolant, traced to a flange, got the part, all boiing but telling you as these are old cars and as such they have old car issues, but notably, they dont rust too badly compared to others of the era. You need ot be hands on. Got a new door lock mech as it doesnt shut properly and have put two new tyres on so they match.
Car will stand me at three grand once its all sorted I reckon.
I would say go for it, but dont kit it, they generally look gash, the best looking, to me is the QS or V6 with the lower airdam and bigger rear spoiler, other than that, spacers, subtle lowering and the right wheels can make them look better, the later ones had a lower ride height, some early oneslook like off roaders.
Dont think it will be problem free, they are old like I said, plus they are relatively complex and have a few niggles, do your research and buy on condition, work done and dont get too hung up on owners or mileage, probably been clocked at some point anyway and I wonder whether those 7 grand dealer 30k examples are just a load of problems about to emerge, time, as well as mileage takes its toll !

ok i wont get a body kit ill slap on some sexy alloy wheels though im sure it will make the car look different
If you were considering fitting an R8 bodykit then I can just imagine the kind of wheels you're thinking of fitting.I'd stick to OEM wheels only if I were you.
Only seems to be two exceptable bodykits in TT circles (I'm a 225 TT owner myself)
Factory/dealer fitted Votex kitted car's seem to be sought after

or making a QS (quattro sport) replica is another ... front bumper is same as the 3.2 V6 & cost upwards of £600!!!

Best advice I can give you is get one & sort any issues the car has first before modding it
Thing like ...
does the Haldex work?
fix the pixels on the dash if there's missing pixels
renew all the breather system pipes ontop of the engine & under the inlet manifold
pull the sump off and make sure the oil pickup isn't blocked
fit new cambelt (even if it's had one recently
I've not done any of the above yet cos I bought mine already broken ... snapped cambelt

you think the mk1 looks better then all the other tts made after the mk1?
We got a Mk3 when they first came out... IMO the Mk3 did, and still does, look far sharper and more modern than the Mk1, and for the time-being I think most people would choose the design of the Mk3... But it doesn't look "better".The Mk1 is iconic and a gorgeous design. Too many of them look worn out, but when you see a nice original/well polished one... Lovely

When the sharp lines of the Mk3 go out of style, all that's left is a less interesting version of the original design.
The Mk2 was nice for about 7 minutes after it was released, before looking bland and out-dated.
Don't bother changing the alloys, just get them refurbished if required and get the paintwork properly polished. If you keep it looking original and shiny it'll still turn heads.
A lot of good info on here - especially J4CKO, thanks. I say that as I'm just starting looking at these myself as the OH has said she'd want one. She works from home and does very little mileage and we want to keep her V70 workhorse so it'll be a little runaround. On eBay the prices are all over the place for these, from 800 quid up, with dealers asking 3K up. As J4CKO has done - I think it;s a case of buy what looks a decent one and then get some money spent and go to town on it.
I'm running one at the moment and can say that if you're looking for an out and out sports car then look elsewhere. It's a very capable car, but doing stuff competent in a stylish way is where it's at.
In terms of performance, Ive been on a few road trips with E46 M3, Porsche boxster and z4m. They were probably all quicker on paper, but own the road the TT held its on pretty well. Was keeping up with the others pretty well. It's a convertible and been remapped to about 260bhp, so not completely standard.
Think if I have time I may change the anti roll bars for ones found on the R32 as it's supposed to improve the handling.
If you're chasing 0-60 times etc then it may not be the car for you either. If I remember correctly, even with a remap the Quattro sport TT is still quicker to 60 due to gearing. But when you're on a rolling start in the correct gear she can hold her own pretty well against sports cars of a similar era.

That QS isn’t a replica ... I know Craig who owned it ... that one is the real one he owned after making the rep! Factory/dealer fitted Votex kitted car's seem to be sought after
