S Max or Galaxy 18 months old 12,000 miles - remains of warranty or Land Rover Discovery 4 ?

Personally the new S max is a bit fat and has naff wheels - lost it's proportions of the previous gen especially the sport version. I have always loved the discovery 4 and love it's stature and luxury interior.

So the maths -

24,500 (euros) 2016 S max or galaxy 2.0 tdi 140hp - decent fuel economy I will do maybe 15000 + kms per year but depreciation of maybe 4000 euros in the first year. Ford dealers are full of them (maybe it was the launch demonstrators)

25,000 (euros) 2011 Discovery 4 3.0 6 speed auto 245hp - poor fuel economy but less depreciation and not so many for sale.

Advise/ help or other?

They are not apples and oranges.

Discovery will cost you more. You know if you can afford that.

I know what I would do...

Discovery offers very little boot space with all 7 seats in place but is a much nicer place to be all the rest of the time; stretch to an 8spd if you can and don't even think about running one without both a warranty and a good, local indie specialist.

We had the Galaxy, the Discovery is more upmarket but they are more problematic and much more expensive to run.

The Galaxy does a really good job of carting a family and stuff round, the Discover does a similar job but weights approximately a tonne more, with the attendant fuel cost, plus the wear and tear to brakes and suspension.

I reckon that the Galaxy returns another 10 MPG in like for like usage.

Only 6 seats. You can get the E63 with a pair of jump seats in the boot though, so it's all good. thumbup

What about a shogun? More reliable than a disco for a start, I’ve a mk3, you’d be looking at mk4 for that money so hopefully a more luxurious interior, I’ve got full leather but it is a bit plasticky inside, everything you need though and most importantly everything still works as it should at 130k miles old, rear most seats also fold into the floor nicely leaving you enough boot space.

A friend of mine has had the last 2 generations of land cruiser and the first one had seats that you had to take out and store if you wanted extra boot space and the newer generation landcruiser has them built into the floor but they seem to take up quite a lot of the boot floor.
Plus second hand prices are eye watering, you’ll be guaranteed to not loose much money on one though.

If you also need the boot space to go with the 7 seats, what about a Viano ? My mate has one for his brood and absolutely loves it.

Food for thought on the mercedes both E55 and R class, the Caravelle/multivan/transporter I like but the vw engine is not very reliable and the fuel costs are not much cheaper than the discovery. Therefore I ended up with the sensible - Galaxy/S max and the man maths Disco 4. The swingometer is over towards the Galaxy/S max at the moment. I suppose I have to try them both...

Surely pretty much all the ones I listed are a better choice than the Disco?

The S-Max Vignale has a better interior and relatively spangly wheels (I have one):

Seats, dash, centre console, etc. are all leather. Lots of gadgets.

Although, if you can get a relatively new Volvo XC90 for a similar price I would consider it - like for like they're a lot cheaper than Disco's.
