All Wheel Drive Estates/Hatchbacks... but not an Audi?
Discussion
I've got a budget of about 8k (max... ideally circa 6!) and would like something quick and planted and ideally all wheel drive. it will also be big enough to get a medium sized dog in the back but only for short journeys (...and only in the event of an emergency as we have a kodiaq for the family car).
So far i like the idea of an R32 (bit worried i couldn't fit the labrador though), a Subaru legacy spec B (GT or 3.0r) or a wrx/sti wagon- preferably in bugeye format.
I've had a couple of audis before and don't fancy another one. Anything else I should consider?

legacy or outback are the answer to this. but theres not that many of the desirable H6 engined ones out there.
for 6-8k you will get a JDM import probably 2003-5 vintage. for half of that you could get a later UK model, probably with a few more miles on, but a radio that gets more than bbc radio 2
these are awesome cars in the 3.0 form, the outback sits a bit taller, but still handles well. they do like a drink, but utterly reliable, and real world mpg of nearly 30mpg is not that bad really considering its capeability

Jag X-Type comes in awd 2.5 and 3.0 v6 flavours. Should be able to find a nice one in budget.
Skoda also do a awd Octavia with a choice of turbo petrol or diesel engines, and plain estate or plastic clad "scout" model bodystyle.
Volvo do a awd V70 in 5 cylinder and 6 cylinder flavours (including the v70R), or the XC70.

The Subaru's will be the same £535 (unless you get a 55 plate or older) road tax as the Saab, the R32 you were considering is in the same boat.
Talking of the R32 I forgot about this car:
4motion 3.2 Passat

Fine if you want a sleeper, but jeez how dull is that to look at.

Were any of the older BMW estates 4WD?
Vauxhall Insignia? - evo rated the 2.8 turbo version highly IIRC:

EDIT: Just re-read the original post - quick and planted rules out most of those, apart from the Insignia and the Yeti (diesel + chipped = 200bhp+ IIRC)

The Yeti can be had with the 160bhp 1.8 TSI and got a cracking review off Clarkson on Top Gear a few years back. Vauxhall Insignia? - evo rated the 2.8 turbo version highly IIRC:
