MK6 Gti - what next

Hi Folks,
As per title we picked up a MK6 GTI at the start of the year but its not really doing it for us, we have had a few issues with the fabled VW corrosion and it is very gutsy for not that much performance.....the wife hates it with a passion
As such I have been looking into changing it out for something else, specification required:
- 5 doors is a must
- Manual transmission
- Decent performance
- 4 WD would be nice but not a must
I am leaning towards a MK7 GTI PP as you seem to get good performance but still ok for sensible driving and has decent room or a Golf R as the MK7 is supposed to be a good step up from the MK6 iteration?
Wife is also keen to look at an S3 in the 8V guise but the MK7's seem a better car and better value?
Any comments appreciated, if it was solely up to me it'd be Megane sport or Civic Type R but these are not fliers with the missus and its not worth the constant ear ache......

Not really worth considering a mk7 GTi if you're wife hates the mk6 GTi, not that much difference and you'll only end up with more earache about it being the same car. What's her issue exactly as it's a great all round car?
Other considerations are:-
Audi S3 (Or RS3 if budget allows)
Focus ST (Or RS if budget allows)
Golf R (Wife will probably hate it still)
308 GTi (Off the radar but a decent GTi)
BMW 140i (Personally find them cramped tho)

Aye true enough possibly, I have no problems with the MK6 although its slightly tainted in my eyes due to all the paint issues we had with it.
She doesn't like the spec as in hindsight I probably should have tried to get a better spec one but it is pretty standard with only the basic radio etc and no options at all, she also comments on how thirsty it is for the performance and I agree it is gutsy for not being that quick (Averaging about 27 mpg a tank with not crazy driving by any means)
Yes an RS3 would be a good shout but slightly out of budget. All reasonable suggestions though maybe except the BMW as not a fan of them for some reason myself. Also decent boot room and rear room is needed as we having a young child with all the usual plethora of toys/buggies etc needing traipsed about.

That's the weird thing I have been taking it to work recently and driving it light footed just to see what I get out of the tank MPG wise and even then I was only 29 MPG....
Aye the argument for poor economy I guess it that not such a problem in my eyes anyway if you get good performance but the MK6 seems quite sluggish and as you correctly say compared to a GTD much the same day to day

It looks like as you say interior is king but S3 (which it seems clear she wants) seems high price wise compared to GTI with PP....

Aye I have heard that is an issue with them being nicked quite a bit, up north of aberdeen so not such a problem plus everyone up here seems to drive performance german......a lot lot lot of Blue R's on the go
I just wish the Megane Sports 265's were in 5 door although when I had my old 172 PH1 she hated that as it was french sh'te (although the electrics were a tad dodgy when it rained

Joking apart, I'd be looking very closely at an Audi. A friend of mine has just taken delivery of a "cooking" A3 TFSI S-Tronic Sport, and the interior quality is really very good. I had a drive of it, too, and was very impressed with the ride and handling.
I can only imagine the "hot" variants are even better.
