Hi all,

Living in Wales and soon moving more rural the thought of having a 4x4/awd appeals just for the dodgy winters and wet muddy roads just to be sure to get around.
We are a family of 5 with 2 grown up teenagers.

My thoughts are a Volvo XC70 awd OR a Hyundai Santa Fe Premium around a budget of 8-10k

Would love heated leather, possibly Satnav, Bluetooth etc

What would be your choice?
Thanks

Have you considered a Nissan Pathfinder? We had one as a hire car for a few weeks when someone crashed into the wife’s car and loved it. It was very agricultural to drive but that just felt right and was quite enjoyable. It gave you confidence it would go anywhere and still had all the extras you could need, including heated leather, Bluetooth, sat nav, reversing cameras, keyless entry etc.

Unless you really want/need the “big 4x4” thing you’ll get a newer, lower mileage car if you go for something like the Octavia Scout - slightly raised estate car with 4WD. Lower running costs too.

Just a thought, nothing wrong with going XC90 etc if that’s what you want, I’ve found a lot of people overlook that class of car and it often feels like it would be a better fit for them while saving money too.

I'd say take a look at the Ford Kuga:

2.5T Titanium (These are high spec & will have all the things you're looking for)

Or if you don't mind higher miles you can get the MK2 version:

1.6T Titanium

They'll be more diesel versions available:

Another alternative is the Mazda CX-7 these didn't sell well but they have the same hardware as the smaller CX-5 so you can pick up a bargain.

Thanks for your suggestions.

I’ve always liked Pathfinders but how thirsty are they?

Kuga has never appealed if I’m honest but appreciate your thoughts.

Do yo you not rate the Volvo or Santa Fe?

I like Volvo's in general & the 2.4d engine is a good one but I don't see them as being better than an SUV so I'd probably take the Santa Fe as you end up with a newer lower mileage car,but don't forget the Kia Sorento (they're the same car) as another alternative.

Santa Fe

Kia Sorento KX-3 these seem to be holding their money well compared to the Santa Fe

The D5 engine is good but does show it's age being pretty agricultural.

Also paired with the Volvo AWD system can be thirsty.
Also heard of the earlier ones failing but that was sorted 06 facelift onwards (at least on the XC90)

Do you need 7 seats? If not what about the XC60 with the 2.0 diesel engine?

Cheaper to run than the D5 and has 160bhp so not that much less.

The one we had probably managed mid 20s mpg-wise, but this was mostly driving short journeys through Sheffield at rush hour to get to and from work so a lot of stop start traffic. Just the sort of thing you don’t buy a big diesel for, really!
