My Citroen C6 got written off last night (at least I'm assuming it'll be a write off due to the damage)

So I'm wondering what to replace it with.

Previous car history has been predominately large Citroen with a foray into Jag and Alfa ownership

Not looking to spend shedloads, and taking into account the current value of the C6 and any anticipated payout, I'm expecting to have up to 7K to spend

So give me some ideas for an interesting, comfy mile-muncher that isn't going to require personal oil refinery levels of fuel consumption, and can carry 4, occasionally 5 in comfort. Longer trips usually involve the Alps and skiing, so luggage space is important but not to the point that am estate would be compulsory. It needs to be interesting and reasonably stylish, and don't forget interesting (that may be technological/engineering interest, styling interest or gadget interest)

Age is less important, but wouldn't want to go much older than say 2007

Most things around are a bit uninteresting.

Alfa 159 is getting a bit long in the tooth and now high mileages.

is a Lexus IS too small?

You can get a nice Mazda 6 under £7500 (2013/14, sub 80k miles). Or a nice Volvo V60? (11 reg sub 70k miles)

Otherwise VW Passat, Honda Accord..

Lexus IS250's are quite the bargain at the moment - despite having a 2.5 litre V6 they will do 40 mpg when cruising at 70mph (a third better than I used to get with a manual 2 litre Honda Accord.)

Road tax is £280 (but a little Yaris hybrid new would be £140 a year now under the new rules.)

They also have a snow mode for the automatic gearbox, and run very well on crossclimates.

I've often dismissed Lexii as being a bit boring but 'needs must' so maybe worth a look.

Currently browsing Autotrader and eBay looking at...

Merc CLS (I like the swoopy line that runs the length of the body, quite stylish imho)
VW Phaeton : 3.0 V6 diesel is the sensible option, but there are a couple of 5.0 V10 in budget
Range Rover Vogue with the 3.0 V6 Diesel (although they are getting on for galactic mileages)

And there's a niggle that is suggesting a Volvo C70 with the folding hard-top.

Also, late model Saabs are creeping in, if only to say I owned one at one point.

I was going to suggest a late 9-5, looking on Autotrader they're holding up pretty well...

On a run, far better than 40 mpg, as reported above.

Cheshire to Oxford and back, over 320 miles, cruise control at 65 (60 GPS) gave me 51 mpg.
Brim to brim,
The on-board mpg computer over reads by 4 mpg, ie says 55 mpg.

Best mpg is achieved is when the engine is running at 1800 rpm to 1900 rpm in top.
It actually has 8 speeds but only 6 show on the computer.

Unfortunately, first-gen CLS' are 4 seaters strictly, with no centre seat at all. Having sat in the rear of an IS250, I must say that it is pretty small as well.

lots of 2007+ e-class at sensible mileages on autotrader for 7.5k or less (im assuming a bit haggle room). a 6 cylinder is a nice combination of classy, quality and performance.

Whilst the E-Class is a great shout, won't it feel a little "ordinary" after a Citroen C6?

I'm thinking the OP needs something quirky and characterful... Unless, of course, he's had a gutful of "quirky and characterful"! laugh

Somebody gets it at least smile

Re the CLS comments : 4 seats isn’t a massive issue. I very very rarely have 5 in the car and on those rare occasions we can make other arrangements.

Jag XJ?

Also thought of the 5 series GT, however they seem to start at ~£12k - may be good if the budget can be pushed a little?

I get you want different the problem is there really isn't that kind of option anymore, if you don't need 5 seats then the CLS is different from the most as someone else said a 5 series GT is another option if the budget allows but if you want a truly leftfield option there are these:

Budget creep but haggling should see you close plus it has half the mileage to the two above.

Or this not quirky but different:

Infiniti M3.5H GY Premium it even has speakers in the seats (I've never come across that before) smile

I'm not sure anything you've listed would replace a C6!

I have a 407 coupe which is the stablemate of the C6, but less quirky. Very comfortable and quiet motorway cruiser and returns an average of 42mpg (it's the later 3.0 diesel, of which there are only 46 on the road). I can highly recommend that as a replacement, in fact there was one on eBay last week, not sure if sold.

The only car if a similar budget I can think I would like to replace it with would be an XF, although I'll add that this is not based on having driven one.

If budget allowed it, a 640d Gran Coupe would be great!

an e class doesnt fit the bill but a cls does? tech wise they are largely the same car and style wise they are both firmly in kebab shop owner territory at that age. they equally suit the purpose of being a comfy mile muncher but thats about it. i think you need to find some additional funds if you want something interesting, stylish and at the same time reliable/new enough to go confidently mile munching across europe.

Jag XJ X350, diesel or the V6 petrol Wonderful things. I miss mine.

Or you could have my Range Rover. 4.4 V8 with LPG, 30MPG equivalent with a new gearbox, tyres and tons of maintenance done and still have 3K in your "oops" fund. You won't find a more relaxing yet rapid drive.

Feel free to PM me and come and have a play if you like.

Styling is very much subjective. I like the lines of the CLS, that sweeping line and the coupe roofline. The E-Class just looks like a big saloon.

The C6 was of a similar vintage, and I was more than happy enough to go mile munching across Europe in that, on a 57 plate with 119k on the clock. Age and mileage isn't a big deal (within reason)

Tempting.. I may well fire off a PM when I've had a thing smile (you're not the first to suggest a Rangey)

It's just the front headlights look like 20 years old now.

Their prices have plummeted, as no one seems to want the old front end

Not really the prices have been pretty consistent around the same as the other German two & they always seem to sell well on the used market.
