Conundrum - bought the wrong car!
Discussion
I’ve been a bit rash.
I really wanted a Porsche 911 but couldn’t find anything in my price bracket.
So I bought a Golf R.
And I’m really not going to bond with it so want to move it on - trade up or down/ sell it.
I’ve had lots of GTi’s from Mk1’s, Mk2’s & lovely Mk5 Edition 30, fast Audi’s, Saab’s, BMW’s but thought the Mk7 R would be a great all rounder. And it probably is but a more inert and dull drive (despite the pretend noise and ferocious acceleration) one would struggle to find.
It’s got most of the nice bits and looks great but we’re not in love.
Any one else feel the same about a new car purchase? What is best course and any car ideas please?!

Wanted a MK7 Golf GTI, ended up in a B9 1.4 TFSI A4. Yeah, that pretty much sums that up for disappointment from me
In reference to your decision, my dad looked at Golf R's and Audi TTRS's. In the end, he went for a 997 Carrera S. I think he'd end up in the same predicament as you and would have regretted it. Saying that, it's cost him a fair bit in maintenance and sorting a few bits out within a few months!

Yep, I bought an Impreza, found that I really didn't like it at all, sold it on after a couple of months.
It happens, particularly with certain cars that I think get a bit of an emperor's new clothes situation going on online.
I sold my impreza after 4 weeks. Two of those were it parked up for sale.It happens, particularly with certain cars that I think get a bit of an emperor's new clothes situation going on online.

Similar story then!

Heart set on a Porsche and really want something old to work on but finances and practicality dictating newer and reliable.
But Golf is just as the ad says. Reliable (and boring) Emperors new clothes it right.
My search continues.
Anyone want a Golf R with a new set of rubber mats thrown in?!

Because we are all (thankfully) different. I've a Golf R and to me it's one of the finest cars ever made....but I completely get it that it's not for everybody.
It’s a fine car but definitely not one of the finest ever made! Mine’s a 5 door and dismayed to discover the rear door cards are wearing cheap as chips plastics compared to front doors, no little LED lights in door pulls as front doors and no lower door lamps which all Audi’s sport. VW cost cutting again.
The R does everything well but seems devoid of any personality whatsoever and removes the driver from actual driving input.
Just feels all show and lots of go but not a patch on my old Edition 30 for feel, presence and good old driving pleasure.

How much?

Out of interest, how much was the Golf? More than a leggy but well maintained 996 I'd guess?
What is/was your price bracket?
I looked at a 993 recently that was priced at £38K. Hoped to get it down to £35K ish but on inspection the car was a bitsa and not worth anywhere near my lower figure despite the ££’s of engine, ‘box & suspension work it had. Just got a bad feeling about it....What is/was your price bracket?
Anyway, a gen 2 997 felt like the right car but most are higher mileage’s around £35K and not having any wheels my knee jerked at a pristine Golf R but really should have got the train home. Instead, I had a pleasant drive back to London in an incredibly capable VW. No smiles though. It’ll be up for sale post Xmas. With its new rubber mats!

Yeah, I sold a VW Transporter camper a few months back, and bought an Accord estate. I enjoyed driving a van, and it had great practicalities including its camping ability, but I was craving bells and whistles, of which mine had none. I bought the Accord, which has pretty much every toy on it and now I miss the load space of the van. Can't just pop into a builders yard for a big sheet of something, bike wont fit in without removing wheels, and the leather doesn't like getting dirty! 3 months ownership and i've been looking at high spec Transporters again.
