They are apparently rivals for wafting.....

So given the choice of sitting in the drivers seat of either for mile after mile of monotonous motorway driving which is preferable?

Thinking 2013 or newer and needing to do 20k miles plus per year.

Alternatives also considered?

For driving yourself mile after mile, the Rangie all day long.

For being driven around (i.e. sitting in the back), the Merc.

Simple as that. smile

The RR is falling like a Piano at the moment so they are not that much different. Buying and selling them is the only real consideration for me so if a RR cost 45k and lost 10k in one year it is no different to buying a Mercedes for 35k and selling for 25.....

For 20k a year and a five year old car I’d personally have the merc as JLR quality isn’t great, I would expect the merc to throw up fewer big bills. If I was buying new or leasing I’d take the RR

The W221 S Class is miles better to drive than the range rover. It rides better, it handles better, it's more comfortable and it's better built. It's also safer. There's a reason it's consistently regarded the best car in the world.

If you really need 4WD would you be comparing the two? Most people think the S Class is for sitting in the back, it's not, it's a fantastic car to drive too. If you're not looking for a limo look for a SWB 350. You have to go and drive both of them, some people want the height and driving position of a 4WD, not me.

I can't go down the leasing route again as my last Mercedes C250 was cheap as chips but killed my back. I can't get out of a lease just because I have a sore backside. 2y years was not worth it just for a few quid.

My current BMW 430D was bought at auction and will have cost me very little for 1 year and 25k miles. This was a great find but probably because it has frameless windows it isn't that refined.

I have decided my next car has to do nothing more than a motorway slog. I just want the comfiest seat and the quietest ride.

My Boxster and R1 compensate for the fun journeys ........

That car went through BCA Nottingham on Thursday and sold for £35k but I couldn't pull the trigger as I want active cruise......

Looked a lovey car though......

Tricky question... I run both...the S-Class (SWB) for work... the FFRR (V8) largely for holidays and touring... I agree with LagerL the S is a hoot to drive and is incredibly sure footed.. But then the FFRR, when not broken in someway, is perfect, can't imagine being wthout one.

If I had to choose and I was just doing motorway miles,... I think the S wins... it never goes wrong, it never stops.. the electrics seem more robust, it is more comfortable, arguably safer and one is less aware of the bulk one feels in an FFRR. Its also whisper quiet and cabin ambience is lovely... especially after a long day.. The only down side of the S is that my mates take the piss calling it a taxi... but they do like being in it...

AndrewCrown thanks for the response especially as you have them both.

What does the RR do better than the S Class though on the road?

-Less stress on long journeys...you can see much further ahead
-If with passengers on a long trip, there is much much more room
-one doesn’t think twice about driving anywhere, in any weather condition, we’re often in the mountains of Europe in winter ...performs brilliantly ...
- in the RR, one floats above the road...it’s a very different feeling, the S is on the road
- it’s more rufty, tufty, lob outboards in the back..move furniture etc...enormous capacity for stuff...
