Around Feb time we'll be looking at an SUV for my mum as a family car. Right now we have a 340i for family stuff and she has my old Focus. The 340i is getting replaced with an M3 and so she needs something that can do the family stuff, tip runs that sort of thing. She wants something like our old X3 3.0sd. The options we've weighed up so far are:

X3 3.0sd
3.0 Touareg
L322 Range Rover

Ideally around £5-8k, any suggestions? Some spec that would be nice would be:

Privacy Glass
Heated Seats
Sat Nav
Electric Folding Mirrors

Sat Nav is a must, leather would be although for the price I've seen nothing without it.

Quick Q ... why is the Nav a must ... Waze, google maps, Apple maps etc... are much superior and include traffic etc... plus they don’t need disc updates that are expensive and you may or may not purchase them

I would add a Mitzi Challenger to your list ... I wouldn’t touch a RR in that budget - too much risk of massive bills!

Rx400h great spec, reliable and fairly economical for its size and pace.

You'll find Tom Tom or the like much superior to Sat nav fitted to those old models, will be cluncky, poor graphics and out of date maps. Much better to go with one of those suggestions.

You’d get a nice Jeep Grand Cherokee for that budget.

Grand cherokee overland. Sat nav is a bit st though. Otherwise it's a great big thing. 3.0 CRD is a pretty good power unit.

Privacy Glass can be added to any car for not to much so I wouldn't let that stop you buying a car, same with the Nav it'll be old so a Garmin or TomTom is a much better option.

Much as I love to trumpet the virtues of a FFRR, this is a fair comment.

Whilst it's technically possible to get a fully sorted L322 for £8k, you'd first need to become the world's greatest expert in used Range Rover buying to ensure you didn't end up with a lemon. wink

Buying Japanese or Korean, you only really need to know how to kick tyres. laugh

If you/your mother really, REALLY want an L322, best start hitting the books now.

Thanks for the suggestions, we're looking more into the Touareg, although there are 5.0 V10's I'm unsure on whether they're a good purchase around this price?

No. Rare, not reliable, not many qualified to work on them. Thirsty. Just get a V6 TDI instead.

What about a 4.8is:

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

If your mums not doing big miles or long journeys then a petrol is a better bet plus it's a V8 smile

Or a Mercedes ML350

Yeah after looking into it the 5.0 V10 doesn't make too much sense, 2.5 TDI seems too underpowered, 3.0 seems like a good bet.

The thing with the X5 is the 3.0sd X3 ticks more boxes for us, we're trying to avoid Merc ML's as both neighbours have an ML/GLE

Have a look on Moses Gate car website. Some of the barges you are looking at will cost big $ when they blow, especially the RR - they are especially cr&p

I heard bad things about the RR, not heard anything too bad about the Touareg, just to watch for drivelines.

Isn't it pretty much a Touareg? Can't find one with a desirable engine for the money anyway.

Yep - Loving the one I just picked up. Not a 'drivers car' but super comfy and a very pleasant space to travel in.
