Hello everyone.

I will be moving to UK next week and planning to buy a car so it will be great if i can get some details and research ahead and not to waste too much time to figure out these things when I am there.

Knowing that insurance is pretty expensive in UK, I would like to ask for help an brainstorm about what are the possible options for cars when I am half year away from 25.

On my mind, I have some old car (E.G.: Golf VR6, Supra A70, Merc R129, MGB GT, etc.) and aim to get cheap insurance with classic car insurance. However, I am not totally convinced as I am worried about fixing them too much as well as the parts available even though these brands still exist.

Alternatively, I was looking at the Audi A3 Cariolet 1.2 version as I believe the insurance is cheaper if the engine size is smaller but I am not certain about that as well because it is a convertible.

Can someone please advise me on car choices and which insurance company I should go with? Also, how much am I looking to pay per month or per year for the insurance approx (as well as the car)?

Any tips will be appreciated enormously. Thanks!

If this is going to be your only car, I think you will struggle with classic car insurance. As far as I know you can only purchase classic car insurance if you already own another car insured under a 'regular' policy.

For insurance quotes there are too many variables really for any of us to guide you accurately. Your best bet is to play around on the price comparison websites. For reference when I was 24 I paid around £1000/year on my Z4C 3.0 with 3 years NCB, living in London.

Correct me if i am wrong but i don't think you can get classic car insurance until you are over 25 anyway.

Hi breakfan.

That's not a lot consider that is a 3 litres (insurance group forty something if I'm not wrong). I guess NCB played a huge part.

How long ago was that? How much more do you reckon I have to pay take into account the fact that I do not have a UK license (but exchangeable)? I've got the license or 4 years with a year of P plate. Don't think I have NCB as I've been driving my family's car for those years but insurance here covers other drivers even without being named.

Personally I’d look at Fiesta ST or 208 GTi. I’d rather an MX-5 or maybe even an RCZ R to the Audi.
Maybe a larger petrol engined saloon like a 535 or XJ would be an option too?

I pay 850 on a Type R (2.0l, 197bhp), 26 with 2years ncb. At 25 with 1year ncb I was paying around the same on a Civic (1.8l, 140bhp). At 24 with 0year ncb I was paying 1100ish on a 1.0l Polo - 49bhp ...

So, your lack of ncb will make a big difference. Try to keep the engine small and play about with quotes - obvious cars (Polos, Corsas etc.) may not be the cheapest.

I had looked at MX-5 but does not seems too practical. RCZ will be out of the zone at I am looking at 1.4 or below as the insurance will goes up with bigger engine.

That's the reason I looked at A3 1.2L Cabriolet. What do you think about this car? Any recommendation for something similar?

How did you pay so little at 21 with such a big engine? Mind sharing? Obviously I don't know when it is which plays a part

why not go on a comparison site, plug in some number plates and find out?

Tried that. Too many variables like I have international licence but exchangeable. I haven't move there so no address, etc.

Get a V5 Type R Impreza? That'll be faster than anything you listed, cheaper and probably better to daily all round. Insurance is classic too I think now. Just for the love of god, avoid Keighley.
