Cheap city car - ideas?

Looking at getting something small and cheap to run about in and take my E39 M5 off the road for a while with a view to having it as a toy.
Looking at likes of Citroen C1s, Toyota Aygos, Peugeot 107s etc. There's a few examples about, but is there anything else worth considering?
I can't seem to get a decent insurance quote for anything much above this level where I currently am. An Aygo/C1 etc is coming in around £300 a year (30, 11 years NCD, no convictions).
I can't seem to find much below £2500-ish worth looking at. Thought there'd be plenty of choice at the £1k mark but doesn't seem to be the case these days! Any ideas?

As an example, 2011 plate with low miles and only £20 VED etc.
Would think it would be cheap to insure.

How small? Panda is a good bet, for £2500 youd get a low miler .
Honda Jazz a decent little car, not tiny in the realms of the C1 etc but you can gt stuff in them. Just be aware of gearbox issues. CVT is an option as well, 7 speed on steering wheel or full auto. Ok so not Ferrari changes but gives you something to play with

Looking at something with pretty cheap tax/insurance and alright on very short round town trips. Something no more than Fiesta size really and 5 door is the preference. Even if I found a shed with a very low buying price and not bad running costs would be enough. I will be doing my own spannering so a shed would suit too as long as insurance was reasonable, I think the ballpark for my area which is acceptable is 300-400 a year. Criminal when my M5 was 800 a year with mods declared where I lived previously

Smart ForFour, old style.
1.1 3 pot engine. There are bigger engines and a derv but I own the 1.1 and absolutely love it.
Easy hit 50 MPG around town, Mitsubishi internals/engine. Very lively engine in-fact. I can get 64 MPG on a motorway run.
Comfy inside, good for short and long distances. Foldable rear seats make it cavernous. Rear seats can be moved forwards/backwards giving you either more boot but less legroom or vice versa.
Very easy to work on and maintain. Cam chain as well so no belt to worry about.

For town trips and commuting, if you spend £40+ on fuel a week and used Leaf on PCP is for you.
We're looking at a used Leaf for the Mrs as she does care work home visits, will be spending about this much a week on fuel and with tax on top an EV looks like a cheaper route. Current car is a Nissan Note 1.6 petrol.

Had a look in to Leaf's and the monthly cost looks fairly high for the mileage I'd be doing. I'd estimate I'd only be doing 2000-3000 miles per year so the fuel cost would be pretty small as it is. All suggestions very helpful! Smart Cars a good idea, although a little small as I'd prefer a 5 door for an occasional trip with a one or two in the back.

I've now found a 2006 5 door Toyota Aygo with ~91k miles on it locally as well so I'm off to see that tonight. That's up for a bit over £1500 so pretty good price compared to most, the MOT history looks OK, with a common airbag light fault fixed recently along with a new battery and wheel trims.
I'll be on the lookout for the usual Aygo problems on viewing. These seem to be clutch issues, window/door seals leaking and exhaust system rust. Any other gotchas I need to be aware of on a higher mileage Aygo?
