Hi All,

There is a 2007 997 Turbo Tip and a 2009 Audi R8 V8 manual for sale near me (separate garages).

Both are similar money.

Which one do you think would be the better investment long term?

I'm thinking 997 Turbo as prices look quite firm?

Thanks,
SK.

I have owned a 997.1 Turbo Tip and thought it was a very underwhelming car. But being a Porsche, that's not to say it won't be a good 'investment' - the Turbo badge helps with that for sure.

I'd say both are at the bottom of their depreciation curves. I don't believe either will be investments.

997.1 will be better money wise but the r8 will be more fun

I found both pretty boring and wouldn't really have seen either as any kind of investment for the foreseeable, but 911s have a pretty solid trend of being decent in terms of residuals. R8 was the better drive for me I just thought the engine could be a bit more tuneful, naturally that's not too difficult to sort out.

tbh the r8 v8 is a bit lackluster too, the v10 plus is far superior

I don’t think either would be a good investment. But of the two, probably the porker.

I’ve owned a 996 tt and R8 V8, and the Audi was much more fun, but slower.

Slower being relative of course, both are fast cars. loved the manual box in the R8.. a real joy.

For driving fun I would stay way from the tip, especially in a turbo. Boring as hell.

Tiptronic in a 997? There's a transmission that should never appear in a Porsche.

Very few cars make money after all overheads are taken away.
If I was looking at one to retain value, I’d probably go for the Porsche. The Audi will always be the little brother to the V10.

But basically buy the one you like the best and don’t worry - neither is going to fall through the floor.

997 Tiptronic is a Mercedes planetary (torque convertor) box isn't it?

With manual gearboxes becoming increasingly rare in high-end cars and the Tiptronic having a relatively poor reputation (compared to PDK) I'd imagine the R8 will probably end up worth more, but I could well be wrong. Neither is going to be a profitable "investment" though.

ETA: Having said that, with the 911 (especially the turbo) increasingly heading down the "GT" path, perhaps a torque convertor auto makes more sense now than it did back in the days of the 993 or whenever Tiptronic first appeared.

R8 easily out of those 2.

Wouldn’t touch a tip personally, especially not over an open gate manual.

Can you stretch the budget and get a V10 R8?

R8 V8 without a shadow of a doubt, heck I'd probably even have one over a manual 997.1 turbo.

The Porsche will most likely be the better investment - they have a huge following.

Having a Porsche always sounds better than having an Audi if that means anything to you.

Both are going to be lovely cars, see what drives better and which feels more special then enjoy the car.

It would be an easy decision for me - the Porsche.
