997.1 Turbo Tip or R8 V8 Manual
Discussion
I have owned a 997.1 Turbo Tip and thought it was a very underwhelming car. But being a Porsche, that's not to say it won't be a good 'investment' - the Turbo badge helps with that for sure.
I'd say both are at the bottom of their depreciation curves. I don't believe either will be investments.

I found both pretty boring and wouldn't really have seen either as any kind of investment for the foreseeable, but 911s have a pretty solid trend of being decent in terms of residuals. R8 was the better drive for me I just thought the engine could be a bit more tuneful, naturally that's not too difficult to sort out.
Very few cars make money after all overheads are taken away.
If I was looking at one to retain value, I’d probably go for the Porsche. The Audi will always be the little brother to the V10.
But basically buy the one you like the best and don’t worry - neither is going to fall through the floor.

997 Tiptronic is a Mercedes planetary (torque convertor) box isn't it?
With manual gearboxes becoming increasingly rare in high-end cars and the Tiptronic having a relatively poor reputation (compared to PDK) I'd imagine the R8 will probably end up worth more, but I could well be wrong. Neither is going to be a profitable "investment" though.
ETA: Having said that, with the 911 (especially the turbo) increasingly heading down the "GT" path, perhaps a torque convertor auto makes more sense now than it did back in the days of the 993 or whenever Tiptronic first appeared.

The Porsche will most likely be the better investment - they have a huge following.
Having a Porsche always sounds better than having an Audi if that means anything to you.
Both are going to be lovely cars, see what drives better and which feels more special then enjoy the car.
It would be an easy decision for me - the Porsche.
