HI all, am currently in the market for a r26, would like any opinions or experience good or bad. Budget is between £5,000 and £7,000. Driving a mk2 mx5 at the moment.

As good as the R26 is a very good car but they're pretty robust try to buy one with the Cambelt/Clutch replaced.

Thanks for the advice, I intend to be buying one of the better examples if I can find the right one so they should have been done by now.

I recently mentioned to the guys at Detail my car by the racecourse that I was thinking of an R26 to go alongside our clio rs200t and they had nothing but horror stories of r26 ownership. Might be worth dropping in and having a chat with them as they are local before you take the plunge

Thanks for the advice and replies. I really want a blue one would consider red, grey or yellow. Definitely not silver or black.

The blue is one the rarest colours. It would be worth looking at other colours if the options are up to what you want.

It might also be worth noting that 7k may get you a 250.

I am in Maidenhead and have an R26 if you want to have a chat about it and a look round one.

I might consider selling this year. Yellow is obviously the best colour by far.

I think that it is the rarity that is part of the appeal to be honest. Also I have looked at 250s but I like the idea of having a very rare top of the range car.
Plus there is a chance that they will apreciate as other rare renaults have done.

I'm on my second R26 now. Superb cars, extremely capable and quick. Yes, they can be expensive if/when they go wrong but it's part and parcel of performance car ownership.

Things like: window regs, injectors, coils, shafts can go for fun but if you look after them then they're not really an issue overall.

  • I'm currently sat with mine on the drive in need of a new driveshaft tongue out

If you genuinely don't mind that would be really helpful. If you PM me a phone or email address then hopefully we can make it happen.

£5-£7K should get you a decent car. I bought mine cheap but I had to spend £1500 getting back up to scratch. They are falling into banger car territory, so some owners can be neglectful. If you buy carefully, you shouldn't have that problem in your price range.

They're not that rare, The Mk3's are much rarer in that respect.

The R26 is known to have a few issues with things like window regulators and others, but they're great cars. If you want to tune the car their limit without forging is about 300hp/300lb-fts.

I have only seen one in the wild in the year I have been interested in them.

I might consider a stage 1 remap which I think gives 260-280hp

Hopefully with using a better example I won't have to many issues to deal with.

Does anyone know what realworld MPG I can expect, Google tells me 23-26 ish?

Depends on your current commute. If you go onto Autotrader (it tells you the official figures of the cars) and look at your current car, what the nearest figure is. Work out a percentage difference between official and what you're getting, and then apply that percentage to the new cars figure and it'll be more accurate.

My 250, which is the same basic engine I get about 25 if I'm gentle, in fairly heavy stop/start traffic and a little bit of motorway (about 5 miles)

Cheers I only commute 5 miles each way all on B roads. Probably close to 50% of my driving is for nothing but pleasure so MPG might be quite low biggrin

On a side note is it only me who had trouble with the auto predict on here? Seems to have a mind if it's own.

Had a balck R26 for a year and loved it.

Spent a load on maintenance inc cambelt, rear disks/pads, tyres etc then ended up selling after a year to free up some cash for a property purchase. Never had a single issue in the year I had it so they can be reliable if you buy the right one KT08 DYH biggrin

Mine had the cambelt replaced before I bought it and other than a window that has just stopped working it has been trouble free really.

Much tougher than you think. Mine has 116k on it is and I am sure is about (almost) as solid as any car with similar mileage. Its clearly been well looked after. For the £3,5k I paid its fantastic.

For £7k it should be about the best available anywhere. The Mk3 is down to £8k now.

I don't think I have ever seen a grey one (unless it's an R26.R)
