Used Car - £2500 Budget
Discussion
Hi all;
As from the title, I'm looking for a car for around the £2500 mark, and I'd like some help with some suggestions.
I'd like it to be fun to drive, and fairly reliable. I know it's not mega money, but it's what I have!
Considered a Clio. I know the 197 can be picked up around there, as well as the 172/182, but I'd have concerns over reliability. Same with something like an RX8.
Main contenders are an EP3 Type R, or the MK6 Fiesta ST, but if anyone else has a suggestion, I'm all ears!

You forgot the baby Renault Sport! Twingo 133 had mine 5 years and no issues at all in 70k just service items and wear and tear.As from the title, I'm looking for a car for around the £2500 mark, and I'd like some help with some suggestions.

The non Cup Chassis RS 197 is a much more reliable (& in budget) car than the previous 182 etc so they're well worth considering.

Seat Ibiza Cupra

Civic Type R

Leftfield options not necessarily the sharpest but still fun.
Astra 1.6T SRI 180
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...
Lexus IS200 LE (hard to find) not the fastest but it has a decent chassis & ticks the reliable box with ease, fun yes they can be & imagine peoples faces as your making progress.

172/182's aren't unreliable.
Just check cambelt/dephaser have been done and the clutch is healthy.
Old shocks , bushes etc don't mean the cars unreliable stuffs just worn out.
Just look at the amount of clios on track days , driven there thrashed then driven home again.
For £2500 I'd also look at meganne 225 , Audi TT , BMW 325ci and Mini Cooper s probably the r53 though with the supercharger.

9-3 Aero? I had a similar budget to you and bought one- £2500 should get you a tidy pre-2007 car. It's quite different from a lot of the cars people have mentioned- quite a bit bigger, not sure if that's a plus or a minus for you, and perhaps less rewarding in terms of handling, but it's quick and a lot of car for your money.

Interesting how you guys mention that the clios aren't actually that unreliable. Is it just an internet thing? For my budget I could get quite a decent 182. I'd be looking to do the odd track day and trip to the Ring so I know the Clio would be a good choice.
Liking some of the left field choices, would never have considered a Lexus!

people think french = unreliable sLiking some of the left field choices, would never have considered a Lexus!
t , they seem to expect a old car to just never need anything replacing due to age.i had a 172 cup the most expensive stuff on that was getting the cambelt done and a new clutch as the subframe needs lowering .
the 182 does far better mpg compared to the 197 to , but obviously you'd be better getting behind the wheel of them and a civic type r to see for yourself which feels best.

What about a Fiat Panda. They are meant to be a bit of a laugh to drive.
Considered it, and it would be a laugh, but they just don't do it for me unfortunatelyegor110 said:

Good to know, thanks. Seen a few 182's come up that take my fancy so that's still very much a contender

Oooh hadn't thought of the Saab, strange as I nearly bought one instead of my Audi. My boss has the Aero Estate and is always banging on about how I should get one, so I'll look into that.https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...
Any thought on the Fabia VRS? Hadn't realised they were in budget and I've heard decent things about them. Also I've spotted the Alfa Romeo GT Cloverleaf, again, anyone got any thoughts on these?
Had my 172 Cup for nearly 8 years, can confirm it hasn't been particularly unreliable.
A few (well known) failures that I knew about & planned for & nothing else to be fair.
As said, cambelt etc is expensive, slightly less so on cars like mine with no A/C though & they are bloody great fun to drive!

Surely cups haven't dropped to £2500 ?A few (well known) failures that I knew about & planned for & nothing else to be fair.

really regret selling mine although the current puma isn't bad and far cheaper to buy than the clio.
