I have around 8 - 11k to spend (mostly on low interest finance) to upgrade my old 2007 Astra to something, I am saving alongside the loan payments for a house in 3 years time, I want a more modern car with something that I can travel in/have fun with, must be petrol, as new as possible, with a good bit of power, I was thinking of a MK7 Golf 1.4TSI or Octavia 1.4TSI SE, also for £8000 I could get a MK7 Fiesta ST-2.

Can’t comment on the Golf or Octavia but the Fiesta is a great car. Nice amount of power, handles like it’s on rails, like you say can be picked up under 10k, and if you don’t constantly drive like a bat out of hell, the mpg isn’t too bad for a turbocharged car.

If you want power with a very decent amount of grunt & newish then the Fiesta ST-3/208 GTI is hard to beat.

If you want something Golf sized then I'd suggest the Kia Cee'd/Pro C'eed GT They're a decent steer loaded with kit, I'd take one of these over a normal Golf/Leon/Octavia etc & they'll still have 3-4 years warranty left.

I'd go for the Fiesta: they are great fun and they seem to be quite tough too.

I'd swerve that little VAG motor - it's a bit fragile and too small for the relatively heavy cars to which it's fitted. I had an Octavia VRs and it was excellent and utterly reliable in all the years I had it. However, I would drive a few of the cars suggested too. I think I need to have a go in a Kia!
