Hi. I am new here and just looking for advice, (excuse my ignorance as I’m still learning!) I currently own a mk4 Polo and I’m looking to upgrade.

I have around £5-6k budget and I am leaning more toward a Polo than Golf, as I prefer the ‘new shape’. I am a bit overwhelmed by all the model variants, and wondering if someone could break it down the differences? I would like a 1.4-1.6L and I would say Petrol not diesel (but that’s only because I’ve been advised against diesel cars in the past...is that outdated??)

One (trivial) thing I particularly like is the sporty interior with the flat-bottom steering wheel... but I can’t determine which models it is fitted.

Thanks in advance for any advice! Harriet

I am not 100% sure but I think that the Flat bottom sport steering wheel is only available on the Polo Gti. The Mrs drives a 2012 Polo 1.2, nice little car but would be a lot nicer with a bit more power

Hey, welcome to the forums. Ignore any stupid posts.

Best place to compare models is probably Parkers - see https://www.parkers.co.uk/volkswagen/polo/hatchbac... If you click Specs you will see the difference between engines and Features will show you the difference between 'trim' levels. I would only consider diesel if you were doing 20k+ miles (and if you were, I would buy a bigger car!). There is also a buying guide here: https://www.whatcar.com/volkswagen/polo/hatchback/...

I'd avoid the lower powered engines and go for one of the turbo-charged small petrol engines - better economy, cheaper tax, a bit of poke. Buy on condition, look for service history. It seems the 'BlueGT' trim has the sporty interior similar to the GTI model,. 'Bluemotion' comes with cruise and a leather steering wheel. 'SE' will be the most common and likely the cheapest.

I've had a few of the newer polos as courtesy cars, bags of ste. So uncomfortable (although I am 6ft 6), no more features in them than a 15 year old lupo and slow.

The fiestas I've driven have been much better.

Or get a lupo GTI, won't lose any money really and it's a much more enjoyable car to own.

i would happily sell you our polo GTi for 6k biggrin

it might burn a bit of oil, but it does have a james bond mode, you can hide from the cars behind you in a cloud of smoke
