Hi,

Picking up a new motor on Tuesday that I have brought over the phone from a main Ford dealer 150 miles away..

I have done this in the past but always paid by debit card once I have viewed the vehicle and I am happy all is well. Only way the dealer will accept payment is by bank transfer and the nearest bank is about 5 miles away and I am on foot.

Got a feeling that the TSB mobile APP wont allow transfers of £18K at least the same day?

What are peoples thoughts

Thanks

Barry

Faster payments have a daily limit of £25k normally. You should be fine.

My mobile Banking app only allows £10k at a time, I just did the required number X £10k to pay on the day

A Ford main dealer without a card machine?

That doesn't sound right.

Ensure the bank account is actually the Ford dealer.

How did you pay the deposit?

Most dealers have a limit on what they accept by Credit Card but they are normally happy to accept Debit Card payments.

Bought my last CLS from Merc Bishops Stortford with my debit card (25k), got a call straight away as expected but was cleared almost instantly.

They will have a card machine but will likely have a policy in place to only accept payments under £500 by credit/debit card due to terminal fees etc.

I think its something to do with the new credit card laws. I could agree to use a debit card and give a credit card instead..means an extra charge of 1-2% for them....

If you're trying to trick them into taking a credit card I can understand them insisting on a bank transfer.

Paid the deposit by credit card, and they say the only way they can accept payment is bank transfer. Wouldn't be so bad if I had seen the car

Until you've seen the car it's a distance sale, you can just leave it if it's not to your liking and get your deposit back.

Are they asking for a bank transfer before you've seen the car?

That would not be usual practice.

Barry, sorry to be "that guy", but you bought the car, you didn't brought it. I won't quote your original post, because I'm not that much of a tt.

Anyway, back on topic, the banking app on your mobile probably won't let you transfer that much money to a recipient you haven't paid before.

Your best bet is to rock up to the dealer with a laptop and the two factor authentication dongle your bank gave you for use with internet banking.

If you don't have a laptop, ask to use the dealer's PC. If they want your money, they'll let you use the computer!

Failing that, give your bank a ring, and explain what you're trying to do.

Bought a car today (Sunday) from a private seller. Transferred £1 as a test by Faster Payments - received in 30 secs, then sent the balance. All good and was done and dusted in less than 1 hour.

It’s onky a distance sale if he never goes to collect it. If he bought it, paid for it and had it delivered it would be a distance sale. Once he steps foot there it is no longer the case.

OP, the dealership will likely drive you to the bank to do the transfer, we have and we would again.

Set them up as a payee on your online banking, send £1, do this a couple of days before you go. Then when you get there borrow one of there PC's, log in and send the rest. Or call your bank and get them to send the money.

Slightly OT, but anybody who logs into their bank account on somebody else's PC is mad in my opinion. You have absolutely no idea what is on there - it could be logging every key press for all you know.
