I have a golf R mk 7 that’s going back to the leasing company early March. I’m thinking of buying a Touarag 65plate. My question is do you think the Touarag will be a lot thirstie on fuel, motorway, around town and country B roads? Appreciate driving style will be different in the Touarag but need to be sure it won’t be a nightmare in comparison? SQ5 was an option but too high mileage on 20k budget.

I suspect it'll have a lot to do with which engine is in it.

The most economical touareg, V6 diesel, is quoted as getting 42mpg. The least, the V8 petrol, gets 31. VW claims the Golf R gets 41mpg. So should be similar or worse than the Golf R.

It’s the V6 diesel, surely in the real world local driving or holiday road trip will see the big 4x4 much worse off than the golf?

VW say a lot of things and 41mpg on an R is only possible on a flat road at 50mph in eco mode coasting.

On a downhill.

With a push.

On the back of a lorry.

I've owned both. My Golf R long term MPG was about 28mpg. I'd see 32mpg on a run, in eco mode, but that never lasted long as it was so boring.

My wife currently has the Touareg 3.0V6 (262PS) to ferry the kids about. She does a lot of short journeys, her long term average is about 24mpg. With the standard fuel tank it takes about £100 to fill it and she'll get about 380-420 miles to a tank.

If you're concerned about MPG, stay away from the Touareg. At the end of the day it's a 2+ tonne vehicle, with permanent 4WD, automatic box (not DSG) running around on wide tyres. It's never going to be economical.

my point was that VW claims the same economy for both, so real world is probably similar too.

Thanks for the replies on this. I get late 30’s in the R on a motorway run 150+ miles. About 30mpg average with mixed driving. Seems the Touarag will get a lot less based on feedback...

Funnily enough ive narrowed my car search down to the same cars.

Particularly like the way the touareg r-line looks.

I've had my 2015 Touareg R-line 3 litre diesel for 3 months now. On short journeys, such as my 5 mile drive to work, I get an indicated 32mpg. On my regular trips to Plymouth from Penzance (75 miles) I get an indicated 40mpg. The return journey shows 36mpg, which I put down to the way the hills run, plus getting out of Plymouth with a cold engine.

Over a full tank I'm getting between 34 and 36mpg indicated.

Checking consumption brim to brim shows the OBC to be about 6% optimistic, so a real average of around 33 mpg over 2.5k miles. Not bad for such a big and heavy car.

I got my 2017 R Line Plus in November (262bhp). 5k miles in, mostly my wife driving, it's averaging 29mpg (a good mix of motorway/town).

It will crack 30 on a run, but only if you're at c.70mph.

Brilliant car. Big, comfy, quiet and surprisingly quick.

20000 miles
123.5p per litre (Diesel)
30 MPG

£3742.95 p.a.

20000
120.9p per litre (Petrol, not super)
36 MPG

£3053.46 p.a.

Thinking about spending £20k on a fast depreciating car, but worried about an extra £700 p.a. if you drive 20k miles? Appx £60 p.m.

The Golf can do 41. Had it in 'mine' on a few occasions.

Fair point Lord.Vador. Seems overall the T will cost more to run in real world driving. Thanks all.

Funny, I too am coming from a Golf R and fancy a 2015ish Touareg.

Had a 2005 one several years ago and enjoyed that.

Did the OP get one?

10k in 5 months, and our Touareg is averaging 28.9 mpg.

To get over 30, you’d need to drive it on motorways 90% of the time and only do 70 downhill with coasting on.

Having said that, it’s a brilliant car. Absolutely love it.
