Both similar size. One petrol, the other derv.
Both have capacity for huge bills. Neither cheap secondhand. Both expensive to run.

Opinions/experience?

Sounds like you're looking for something reliable, good value to buy, and cheap to run, and looking for people to persuade you away from these and into something different.

No - both look nice cars but opinions from people who have owned them would be appreciated. I realise both have the potential to take the shirt from your back. I currently have an A6 petrol V6 so frequent visits to texaco are the norm.

IME:

Current 335d touring is fantastic. AWD and prodigious grunt. The previous one was still very good, but less so.
Current S4 Avant is ok. It's not a sports car, its a bit 'meh'. Nothing wrong but nothing overly right....other than its petrol so sounds better. The one I drove had an optional sports differential(?), apparently without, they are even worse. It doesn't drive anything like as well as the 3-series.

My money between the two? I'd go 335d, all the fun, better 4WD (IMO) and incredible mpg on a run at least. But I'd also want to try the 340i wink

I've had my 2009 S4 for 5 years and it's brilliant, the engine is a joy, will happly pull 6th down to 20's MPH, huge amount of grip, 30MPG on a run 23 long term avg.
Some people say dull to drive but I just find it very competant, no clever diff and I've never understeered off the road in all this time biggrin

The '35d engine is a cracker. My dad had it in his E60 5 Series Touring and it really was a lovely thing to drive. However, i wouldn't be entertaining a diesel of any kind unless doing mega miles. I assume with you being in an A6 V6 at current then you don't. So, i'd go for the 335i in that respect.

As Ares said though, we need to know exactly which models of each that you're looking at. I do like my Audi's so the S4 would be another good option. I'd much prefer to be in the Audi, as i think their interiors are much better, but the BMW would be the one i'd want to drive.
