Greetings all

I spend a lot of time in the Republic of Ireland as my wife is Irish. At present, when we visit we end up nabbing my mother in law's car to get about in - which is not ideal. Hence I am looking for a car of our own to keep over there. We are lucky in that we will be able to garage it at the in-laws place.

Car tax laws in Ireland are such that if you have a car over 30 years old then it's exempt from tax and, as of May 2018 only needs testing every 2 years. This is significant as taxing a newer 2 litre car is approx €1000 per year. Also import duty for a car over 30 years old is only approx €200.

So - criteria are as follows:

Solid, with at least 4 seats
Easily serviced/ repaired by any old local garage
Decent ride as the roads are pretty rubbish in places
Reliable
Having some element of character

I'm thinking w124 or 190E mercedes at present. Or if I can find one an e34 535i with a manual box....!

Any suggestions?

Regards

K

Should also have said it's a non starter to try and find a car in Ireland - the average Irish person's attitude to motoring is buy a car, and run it 'til it dies. Mud is regarded as a means of preserving the body as it ages! Hence very little older stuff survives that isn't shagged smooth.

Good shout on the 205 - I've always found that even the basic ones are entertaining.

Would love 6 series but budget of £3k and complexity rule that out unfortunately

Either an E34 or a Triumph 2000 - easy to fix, reliable, rides supremely well and very characterful! Finding one may be an issue though...

something a little left-field as you don't have to worry about tax... there are a few rumbling about over here or they are easy enough to import

You’re really 300bhp and ICMFPs. hehe

I did genuinely scroll back up on my phone to see if you were actually 300bhp. smile

I believe Audis of that era were almost unique in being galvanised which might be a pretty significant bonus?

Audi 80 or 100? Solid, reliable, galvanised. Also not fashionable like similar aged VWs.
The e34 5 series is a good shout if you can find a nice one but they do rust, similar aged e36 3 series can also be decent, and also rust.

To be honest at that age condition is more important than specific models, I'd be searching car and classic for old German barges.

Would you not just ferry your own car over ? Or do you want something interesting ? If I was doing this id buy an old 1.3 lancer or some ball of ste like that.. 3 months tax on my 520d is €200 exactly and on my r53 it's €145. 2.0 cars are I think 6-700 not a grand I'm not sure it's to cold to go out and look biggrin I'd wager pre 90's cars here are in better nick than the uk rust wise it's just people don't care as much as you UK lads which is a shame.. i can have a look around
