Weekend Toy - Another One
Discussion
Hi all,
I am currently in search for a weekend-only car that ticks these boxes:
- Depreciation resistant
- Mod-friendly
- Manual or if Auto(Dual Clutch)
- Will keep it for 3-4 years
I have these on my mind:
370z - Only autos available locally, so unsure. Very mod friendly.
Camaro ZL1 - Have to drive it. On paper they say it handles and goes fast. Very mod friendly.
Porsche Cayman S 987.2 PDK - Top range of the budget. Would only fit an exhaust since the car comes "ready" as it is
S2000 Ap1 - From what I've read is that the Ap2 is more favorable.
E46 M3 - I have a manual available that needs some love. I need to check it out in person to see how much love it actually needs $$$. High kms as well (172k)
Not going to mention price because I'm from Chile. But here's the order from cheap to expensive because why not:
2003 S2000 < 2014 370z < 2003 E46 M3 < 2012 Cayman S < 2014 Camaro ZL1
Pushing the budget by a hefty amount would be a 2009 911 997.2 Carrera S. Yolo?
I've excluded 135is,S4s, Amgs, etc. because they would fit better as a daily for me rather than a weekend toy.
Missing any big ones?
Thanks!!!

S197 Mustang (2005 - 2014) comes in various engine types and is available as a manual and automatic.
High milers start at £11,500 for a GT Automatic (private sale 100,000+ miles) and get progressively more expensive as you go upwards. V6's start at a few grand less than that.
If you want a Manual and a well balance hp/price you are probably best of with an early 5.0 V8 Manual, but you will be looking at £20k + and private sale, expect more from a dealer (but then from a dealer you will get a limited warranty.
They do handle with the right suspension mods (stock cars are nice for the purists but if you want a fun toy get one with the suspension already done, saves you on import duty and garage fees), It won't have IRS (none of the 05-14 cars did) but it’s amazing what a pair of lower control arms, 25mm springs and some decent shocks do for the handling!

Thanks!! Actually after much thought I would love to opt for a GT500 over a ZL1...unfortunately I have none available.High milers start at £11,500 for a GT Automatic (private sale 100,000+ miles) and get progressively more expensive as you go upwards. V6's start at a few grand less than that.

You seem to know a lot about stangs, what mods (hopefully just bolt ons) would be needed to get on par with a GT500?
I'm sold on a 987.2 Cayman S with PDK but I am not fully committed yet.
Thanks!
To get a stock stang on par with a GT500, you are looking at:
Lowering Springs + Shocks (Eibach make a good kit) + camber bolt kit
Control arms and relocation brackets for the rear (BMR)
Adjustable panhard rod (BMR) centres the axle after lowering.
14" brake kit for the front, plus either bigger wheels (recommended) or hub centric spacers to allow stock 18's to fit.
good quality disks and pads on the rear
Strut tower brace.
Supercharger kit (Roush TVS on an 05-09 car) and supporting mods.
It's all bolt on, but that will out handle a GT500 and in reality be just as good, it won't have the Shelby name on it (which helps during resale). Naturally it's going to beat the crap out of the stock driveline components so gradual upgrades there as parts wear out is a good idea.
You can make them way faster than a GT500 but then for safety's sake you are going to be doing more than bolt ons if you want things to last (i.e. a bottom end rebuild with quality components by a race engine builder).

That ain't too bad but the again a GT500 is a GT500. Anyways, today I tested the cayman and the ZL1 back to back and boy my smile was wide as hell when I saw the ZL1. When I was checking out the cayman and test drove it felt like I was buying a daily driver...not a weeekend toy. Lowering Springs + Shocks (Eibach make a good kit) + camber bolt kit

This ZL1 was black and standard; however, it had seen better days. Tomorrow I'm going to check out a yellow one. Not a fan of the color but at least its from a known source and looks more taken care of than this black one.
