Jaguar X Type V6 advice
Discussion
10 years ago I wouldn’t have looked twice, but now I love the look of these. I love that they’re cheap and I don’t care about the perceived Ford image they have. I think the sport model is an exceptionally handsome car. Running costs look reasonable, so that’s not really a concern. Not too fussed if it’s a 2.5 or 3.0, although I’ve heard the 3.0 is significantly quicker, it doesn’t look it on paper.
Avoiding 2006 on examples because of £500 tax, for £2000ish can I expect to see myself in a reasonable condition awd sport model? Like the looks of the estate actually. Is corrosion a huge issue with these? An old PH thread advised 2004 onwards there are no rust issues as Jaguar got their act together. Still hold true?
Cheers!

Well, from my experience of the last 6 months, don't expect miracles. I bought a cheap 2004 2.5 Spirit last summer with only 50k miles on it.
Since then I've had all manner of issues in the 2k miles I`ve put on it. Mainly due to the comical build quality.
Compared to the Jap machinery I'm used to it's laughable.
Lambda sensors, doors that don't open, a dead radio, door cards that fall off, a suspension system that bangs like a s
t house door in a gale, noisy wiper linkage, side skirts that flap about in the wind. Etc etc.
All the known issues are well documented online, mine suffers with most of them and has now developed the dreaded transfer box whine.
On the plus side, parts are cheap and plentiful, the V6 is a great engine, it`s a lovely thing to cruise about in, the AWD on winter tyres is decent and, laughably in the light of the above, people seem quite impressed by the fact you own a Jag that unbeknown to them, it's a cheap, poorly built snotter with more inherent faults than West Hams defence.

Thank you. Not bothered about build quality really. Being in the motor trade I get very good discount pretty much everywhere I need to shop. And at the price point I can tell you any BMW or Merc won’t be much better, and an Audi would send me to sleep! It has to be AWD and a Sport though. I’ve had my 3.0 Sovereign for 16 months now - 2005 auto bought for a whisker under £4000 with just 58k Miles. I have put on 20k Miles, mostly A road and Mway driving and save for a full service and new tyres, it has been faultless.
Superb in the winter months and still a lovely old bus to cruise around in.
Build quality is fine on mine - buy the best condition you can, change the oil in the auto box and all should be well.
Without doubt, the best value for money car I’ve ever had.
