What would you go for guys?

I'm talking comfort, great build quality, zero rattles near enough?

EDIT: Must be a petrol and five doors. The smaller in size the better

You don't mention any other practical considerations, but a W220 S-class or C215 CL would be my choice.

If diesel you can start to get the newer W221 S for budget as well.

I just picked up a 2005 Volvo S60 2.5T for £2k - and that is solid, no rattles, very smooth and quiet. I suspect a younger one for a bit more money would be much the same.

Absolutely. I was just about to say the same.

^^^ This.

The W221 S-class that I had was astonishingly free from creaks and rattles. The Range Rover I was obliged to replace it with doesn't even come close.

£5k, comfort, build quality, no rattles, low noise, petrol, five doors:
Rover 75 2.5 Tourer
Subaru Legacy 3.0
Volvo V70 T5 or T6 (maybe lucky for £5k)

When I was into quiet comfortable cars I always bought Jaguar XJ6s (I’ve had 4)
Any BMW, AUDI, VOLVO should fit the bill though!

Hybrid Lexus of some sort maybe? Build quality and electric drive culls a lot of NVH at source.

This is a good shout; mine is also butter smooth and whisper quiet. No rattles from the interior (build quality is excellent).

I picked my 2008 525i up last summer for just under £4500 last year. You'd never think to look at it or to ride in it that it turns 10 years old this year, or that it had done 146k miles.

BMW fans seem to prefer the E39 5-series to the E60 - can't say I've had the pleasure of driving in one (or being a passenger), but a quick look on Pistonheads classifieds suggests that there's a whole range of E39 and E60 models (saloons and the equivalent Touring models, in petrol or diesel) available for under £5k.
