Dear reader

I have a budget of approx £10-15k and am looking at buying an X5 2008-2010 plate SD X5 (M Sport spec).

Before I take the plunge and put my money into a big heavy depreciating asset, please can anyone who has owned one of these cars give me any helpful advice?

Thank you so much.

The SD is twin turbo so can be quite juicy in reports I have read from other owners, I think problem wise it's general X5 stuff to look out for -

One thing to look out for and could be myth but not worth trying, BMW recommend ‘*’ rated tyres only and some who have veered off this path have encountered diff problems but it could be forum scaremongering.

The rear seals on the inner pair of rear lights (on the boot) are rubbish and let water in causing the light to corrode and fail, that’s what mines in for now. Over £500 in parts plus labour - thank god for warranty!

Rear suspension is self levelling air springs, over time and with age they can fail/leak meaning a lop sided X.

Panoramic roof can cause issues, drain holes block and water finds its way inside. Also mechanism can jam and there are fixes but lots of people report leaving it broken in closed position so if you look at one with pan roof try it out extensively.

Not a huge amount E70 specific, like any car that was once £££’s to buy it will still cost £££’s to run so seek out a good warranty and go in with eyes open.

I had an ML320 before and X5 is far better in comparison. There are some desirable options to be had so keep your eyes peeled!!

Ours is up for sale but not SD just D however is BMW Approved Car with 8 months BMW warranty remaining which is transferable and extendable.
