Dear reader

I have a budget of approx £10-12.5k and am looking at buying 2008-2010 plate with under 90,000 miles on the clock.

Before I take the plunge and put my cash into a big heavy depreciating lump, please can anyone who has owned one of these cars give me any helpful advice?

The road tax is a killer (c.£505), hence why I am thinking if I am better off buying either a Volvo XC90 or BMW SD X5 which seem cheaper to run.

Thank you so much.

Id be surprised if there are that many around with that sort of vintage and that level of miles on them?

I would be cautious around the autobox as that can be comically expensive when it goes (same with all VAG DSG autos)

Not sure if these have the air suspension but that can be ruinously expensive as well when it starts going wrong.

I know of quite a few Touraeg owners that have dinged them due to the sheer size vs regular parking spaces etc... so I would be conscious of dodgy repairs too.

(I have an 09 plate Q7 which is the same platform as the Touraeg I think, and these have been the big concerns for me, but mine will be leaving my ownership in the coming couple of months)

A good friend has had one for a while and loves it. Bad points are thirst and the cost of the tyres which it seems to eat regularly. Theirs is pretty high mileage (150k or so) and they'll probably get rid soon, its about to throw a massive bill for some indeterminate engine fault that seems to come and go (emissions related).

I had one on a 56 plate several years ago, and I loved it. However, they are not that cheap to run, so be wary of fuel costs and tyres. Obviously if something big goes, it will be pricey, so depends on your budget. I had a quote on a steering rack of over £1k.

I posted on your X5 thread, Touareg is nice but different kettle of fish compared to an M Sport X5 and as for being more efficient I would imagine there is little between the. Touareg is a 'softer' drive and more in line with comfortable/wafty SUV whereas X5 feels every bit as M Sport as any other and riding on big wheels with low profile tyres you feel EVERYTHING so I would suggest driving both back to back.

Check to make sure the prop bushes aren't on their way out (very hard acceleration shows this up) as this is an expensive fix but a common issue on the Touareg/Q7/Cayenne.

thanks - it would only be used 1-2 times a week. Did you ever buy the tyres from Black Circle as their savings seem rather good in comparison to what garages charge the customer..

I would be very surprised if you picked one up for any where neare that spec, for your price.

May need to a 3k minimum to get one,
Actually, add another 5k on.

Ours is a 2012 V6 Bluemotion Touareg.

In at nutshell Touareg's are great.

The MK1 and MK2 we're designed to be the best 4x4 / Suv and take on the range rover. Its a proper 4x4 with mechanical diffs etc. Ok some trim plastics are slightly more suspect but overall these are probably the best 4x4 .

Things to look out for on mk1 and mk2.
Gearbox valve chest can go. Check the auto box shifts well especially between 4th -5th and down again.
New gearbox over £1200.

Propshaft bearings. These go every 70k miles and if so its new propshaft time. If there is no documented work get the bearings replaced straight away then every 70k miles. Parts under £100 fitting £200 +. Alternatively get reconditioned propshaft fitted for around £400 -500 at specialist. VW charge £1500 for a new one.

Aim for the 3.0tdi Altitude.
