Buying a car Mini Cooper

Welcome. I want to buy a car - Mini Cooper from 2006 and I want to know which version will be better: diesel or petrol. I also would like to know which engine do you recommend: 1.4 or 1.6. I must confess that I will use it in a city more than out of the town. I can spend maximum 5500$(4000 pounds).
