A bit of background...

I'm in a town just outside of Birmingham. Had some bad luck with thefts in recent years with hot hatches and when my child came along went for 2 family hacks and an NB MX5 on the side.

I'm now looking to combine 2 for a solid all rounder but keep coming up against the fear of theft. Not that the car will disappear in the night but the break-ins or violence as seen with Golf R's etc.

So the Cupra 300 ST is appealing to me. Not many on the road, not much talk about theft and pretty understated bar the alloys. However I'm wondering if I'm being naive and asking for trouble owning one.

Any experiences or thoughts?

I think you'll be fine, if you're worried fit a disc lock & you'll put them off.

I was wondering exactly the same thing...but a 280/290 ST, so worth a bit less!

Plenty of thefts of these sort of vehicles around Birmingham, ST's, R's, RS's etc. Personally wouldn't even consider one without a full wheel disc lock - just isn't worth the risk with how stupidly easy they are for criminals to take.

Would also be tempted to keep the keys in some sort of metal tin to prevent the keyless entry doors being opened at all. There's been recent articles of vehicle interiors being stripped out without the car being taken.

This is ST as in estate car though...mind you, I guess you can get more of your swag in the back of an estate, so could be a target!!

Same could be applied to any major city though really.

It could, but birmingham is ridiculously rife it seems atm.

Seriously consider something like an Autowatch Ghost,in addition to a disclock.
Try not to go keyless,as relay attacks and keyless thefts are popular in the cities. Its rife in and around Birmingham at the moment. If you do go keyless, use a faraday bag.
Make sure that your house security is up to scratch,so a decent door, locks etc...
The above isn’t scare mongering,it’s just the basics that you have to consider now, with any new car purchase.

Don't get me wrong they are the more likely vehicles to be stolen
But there are thousands and thousands of cars of that type and only a very small percentage get stolen.

my advice is don't buy a car based on whether you're going to have to make an insurance claim. get the car you want and dont let anyone tell you different. Okay there's a chance it could get stolen, but there's also a chance you could crash it, or you could lose all your money and have to sell it, all sorts of things can happen, just make the most of what you have and do what makes you happy !

I wouldn't mate, Golfs are knicked because they're subtle and lowkey. A 4WD 300bhp Leon Cupra Estate is even more understated and is more practical

Just got rid of my Golf R after an attempt take it last week.

Smashed back door window but couldn’t get past the inner glass then tried to smash the front glass and kick the door in.

Only had it 5 months but it had to go.

Thanks for the replies. I guess its probably not the best idea. If I was single it wouldn't cross my mind but I cant handle the worry of putting my family at risk for some metal.

I've had a steering lock angle grinded off so dont have much hope relying on them but I think going tighter with Ghostwatch is going to increase the risk of violence. Its one thing seeing it in the news but when multiple people you know have had beatings, carjackings and armed robbery's it really makes you think about it.

The compromise however I think is to lease another A4 and get the EP3 Type R I've been after for ages.
