In the market for new car. Do approx 8-10k miles/year.

Test driving the 1 series at local dealer this weekend. Like the look of the Sport and M Sport.

Any advice on which model(s) worth considering? Petrol/diesel?

That's a good suggestion - they are probably the most reliable models in the range and their depreciation has been gentle in comparison to the leaden figures of the diesel models.

With your annual mileage, you don't need a diesel, so you have quite a few petrol-powered models to choose from, but the 3 litre, 6 cylinder, turbo is extraordinary and very rewarding. IME, the others are not nearly as lovely.

If you are buying brand new, look at prices from brokers, such as Broadspeed.com. They offer discounts that the main dealers normally refuse to match - last time I looked, they offered more than £5000 off the price of a new, well specified M140i.

Would those models be ok to purchase used as well as brand new?

Yep although make sure you do the maths (available discounts can make new not much more) and if there are specific options you want you may have to be patient. If going New, look at Coast2coast or TRL on BabyBMW...

IMHO the M140i is the one to go for.
