Hello guys,

I've been looking for my next upgrade from my corsa 1.2 and I have found a golf mk5 1.4tsi GT sport with 55,000 miles on the clock. My question is has anyone else owned these and what has there experience been like with these. The car has good performance, it's a good looking and I like VW's so it fits the bill for me, but just need to know others peoples opinions. Is there any known issues with these as well?

If you have a suggestion or a smilair sort of car please list below as well

Cheers

Is this the twincharged supercharged/turbocharged unit? If so it's usually the case to stay clear of em

There are lots of reports online for these engines fitted in all of the VAG cars, a quick Google will tell you a lot. The engines are prone to eating themselves and are obviously not cheap to replace. We have replaced several of these engines through work with as little as 30-40k miles. Stay well clear and get a different engine.

Seconded to steer clear of the super and turbocharged engine. Well documented issues. The mk5 gti was a return to form for VW so go for that if not too much of a financial stretch. Otherwise the regular 1.4tsi with around 120bhp isn't bad. I've driven it and although no rocket ship it does have enough power to be interesting. Certainly a solid step up from the corsa which I know well as my fiancée has had one for the last 8 years.

Some further info here: https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=16... check if it's the 'twin charge' one with the Super and turbo charger. If it is, avoid like the proverbial plague.

I worked at a Volkswagen dealership for a couple of years. The techs used to stick a picture of the two engineers that designed the engine getting some fancy award under the bonnet of the cars they were replacing the engine of. All to remind them who they hated the most.

I think it’s the CAVE coded 180bhp Supercharged+Turbocharged engines that had the severe issues. These were found in the Ibiza, Polo GTI and Fabia VRS between 2009-2012.

The older 150 is a better engine as far as I am aware. The Golf GT MK5 is a great looking car, I would go ahead if I were you! Or do they not do a 2.0TDI version of the GT?

I was just gonna say that. I've got a mate with one of these in his MK5 and it's been pretty faultless. He's had his for years aswell.

I believe the issues that they had were with them being a cam-chain and prone to snapping. VW can't seem to produce chain-driven engines without issues. Other than that, i don't believe they were too bad.

I'd still go for a GTI though and save/spend a bit more. I'd just feel short-changed otherwise.

No, and the GTi isn't without issues either.
